How to thaw pipes?

Returning from holiday today (currently at the airport). The forecast was 2*C minimum so we turned the heating off completely. But it turns out it has regularly been freezing - minus 2 last night.

Is there anything I should do in return to prevent burst pipes??! Turn on the heating a little bit at a time. No thermostat so can't alter temp.

It’s a bit late for that now as the pipes burst when they freeze. They don’t start leaking until you turn the heat back on and they start to thaw. So if any damage is done to the pipes, it’s already happened.

The best way to prevent frozen pipes is to turn the heat down, not off. 12C is what we usually set it at.

We cannot set the temp. It's either on or off. That's the problem. Will find out in return I suppose.
