Dark lines over radiator

Can someone please tell me why I have dark lines coming through my walls just above radiators? It’s happening in rooms newly plastered and rooms that haven’t been touched in years.

I think it's the grot caught in the fins of the radiator that rise with the heat.

It's dust tracking marks. You need one of those long dusting 'wands' to get the crap out of the fins of the radiator. If you have decent paint, you should be able to wash off the marks with washing up liquid.

I used to get that when I dried my washing on radiators.

Same - I assumed it was slightly damp bits from the water in the washing!
