Neighbour's Log burner chucking out smoke

Not sure if this is the right place but here goes...

a close neighbour has a log burner and his chimney is right at the end of my garden. (We contacted the council when he first installed this chimney as we felt it didn't meet planning, but they said it did. It's very low, on a bungalow.)

He is forever burning stuff and even on beautiful days when we sit out or have white washing outside, it's smoking. The smoke hangs around in the shrubs in our garden and it stinks.

We live in a 'smoke allowed' zone so I doubt we can complain but it is really affecting our quality of life and possibly health!

My question was, is he allowed to do this?

And is it worth pursuing it with environmental health?

Report your concerns to environmental health. They will be able to advise if it constitutes a nuisance and take appropriate action.

We have a similar situation with a neighbour's log burner smoke, not all the time though.

TheNoonBell · 13/02/2023 15:24

Sounds like he is burning waste wood and/or wet wood.

Must stink in the house.

GasPanic · 13/02/2023 17:16

Report to environmental health.

This probably is not a log burner. It's an "any old crap" burner.

If the council has inspected it and say its fine, plus you're not in a smoke free zone, probably not.

I think it's now law to only burn smokeless coal and kiln dried logs. If its smoking, I would presume he's burning wet logs or any other wood he finds.

We have an open fire and rarely see smoke fron our chimney, one of our neighbours cottages smokes a lot, but he's a gardener so probably burns what he cuts.

Not sure who polices this policy of smokeless fuel, or who you report to

The smokeless fuel and dry logs rule changes only relate to small volume sales, not use.

I suspect your only option is to offer to pay for a taller flue in the hope it dissipates the smoke better.

I'd probably consider moving tbh unless there's a chance they will move any time soon? I had this very issue once, but we were renting so just moved.

We have the same problem. Our inconsiderate neighbours have erected a chimney thing on their flat roof which isn't far from my bedroom window. We all live very closely to one another in terraced houses and the smoke is billowing out of it. What's worse is that they don't burn the correct fuel, it's normally wet wood. God forbid we leave a window open and my house stinks. To add insult to injury they have a large supply of chopped wood sitting in the garden and soaking wet. Total imbeciles!

KangarooKenny · 17/02/2023 21:15

A neighbour has one of these, and I can’t understand why the top of the wood burner chimney doesn’t have to be above roof height, like the chimney on the same house.

Morechocmorechoc · 17/02/2023 21:22

Same issue here but chimneys are higher and we still get caked. Smoke goes everywhere unfortunately. Every day. It's miserable.
