Opinions on Devol kitchens

We can just about afford one as our kitchen is small and their designers have produced a great layout which uses all the space well. I love the solidness of and the look of Devol. However, a similar style from Howdens is so much cheaper. I've looked at DIY and they don't have a really plain shaker front.

Is Devol really worth the price? Anyone have one or thought about buying one?

Try handmade kitchens of Christchurch. I’ve had two kitchens from them and they’re lovely. You do have to paint them yourself though, or get a kitchen painter. They’re about half the price of Devol.

BookwormButNoTime · 11/02/2023 09:12

Highly overpriced. I mean, they’re nice, but they have a huge mark up just for the name.

CupEmpty · 11/02/2023 09:15

You’d be better getting a local joinery company to make one. Did you have to put a deposit down or anything to sit with their planners? Can you just book an appointment?

GertrudeBell · 11/02/2023 09:16

The kitchen in our last house was Devol and it was completely gorgeous. Really solid, with smooth running drawers and wooden interiors and in a unique paint colour. It was hugely expensive but I never regretted it.

We went for Howdens in our current place thinking that we’d not really notice the difference but it’s unfortunately just not the case. The Howdens feels very lightweight, the drawers are ugly inside and we’re having endless problems with the dishwasher door. It’s fine, but it doesn’t give me particular pleasure.

I’d choose Devol again if I could afford it.

We've just got a handmade kitchen of Christchurch. It is beautiful. The quality is unbelievable. If I could have afforded someone to paint it, I would definitely do this.
I can't comment on devol but I can't see the difference other than the convenience.

Thanks everyone. Does Handmade kitchens of CC have a showroom? I can't seem to find one and I would want to see their kitchen. They so seem cheaper, ass do White Kitchens, But Devol is so beautiful ...

Also, yes we did have a planning appointment with Devol so we have real costs from them.

Yes In Esher or Christchurch

Baxdream · 11/02/2023 09:29

Also mcclark bespoke on instagram does beautiful kitchens!

Friths · 11/02/2023 09:53

Thanks all. You've articulated exactly what I'm worried about @GertrudeBell so something between Devol and Howdens might be good. Painting worries me though, even by a professional. Can it really look as nice as prepainted ones?

For some reason I was on the Christ Church old website and not impressed. The new one is much more encouraging 🙂

I have a HMKOC kitchen and it is great but my goodness I'd love a devol one next time. Painting it was fine and most of the devol colours you can match very closely to F&B.
The waiting times are very long at the moment for HMKOC I believe so that might be a factor?

For me it would come down to how long you are planning on living there? If it's a long term home I think I would go for the one you really love but maybe I'm a sucker for their marketing!

MsShopper · 11/02/2023 11:01

Olive & Barr’s kitchens are lovely if you want the Devol plain shaker style - and a lot cheaper.

Friths · 11/02/2023 19:40

Thanks all. We think we'll be here for at least 15 more years but who knows. Heading to Esher next weekend. If we like them, we will definitely have them professionally painted and can use the saved money on quartz worktop and great ironmongery. We don't plan to install until the autumn so no huge hurry.

Enjoy the showroom. The only issue is I don't think their sale is on at the moment, which makes a big difference in price.

Friths · 12/02/2023 11:37

@Baxdream Do you know how often they have sales? I'm comparing their prices online with ones we got from Devol and they're about the same or more expensive. Plus you need to factor in painting costs. I'm surprised.

Olive and Barr look lovely but their guarantee of 15 years is void if your own installer unwraps them on delivery, let alone installs them 😳

Pre-painted ones are sprayed OP, that's how they get the finish. In your position, I'd get an independent professional carpenter & get the doors sprayed. Masses cheaper.

Thanks for this thread! I don’t know if you have considered Craigie woodworks but their website is lovely…. They wouldn’t ship to me in Canada but they recommended DeVol to me and I think quite a similar product… Would British Standard cupboards work for you? They are the standardized version of Plain English.
I would love Plain English but can’t afford it, they start at 50k US. I am also torn about DeVol, could just about run to their Shaker line but feel like I would be paying up for a New York showroom I would never get to visit… Inframe cabinets are barely heard of here, I am seriously considering shipping from the UK but overwhelmed by websites. If anyone has any recommendation for a small scale, high quality cabinet maker who would be willing to work with us to ship to Canada, I would be super appreciative.

I have a British Standard kitchen which I got handpainted and got the handles and so on from DeVol. Most people ask if it's DeVol.

Saddlesore · 01/03/2023 17:07

My kitchen is from The White Kitchen Company. Beautiful wooden interiors, feels solid and sturdy and it can be done in any F&B or Little Greene colour. Highly recommend.

Hillwalker · 16/12/2024 13:03

Getting crap service from DeVol. Started installing kitchen on 21/10/24 and still not finished due to various issues and bad scheduling. The actual kitchen is nice, although it all has a strange smell, but losing all faith in DeVol at the moment.

Were the issues sorted out okay in the end @Hillwalker? Would you recommend DeVol after your experience?

Hillwalker · 11/01/2026 08:28

All worked out in the end and very happy with the kitchen. DeVol never contacted us to ask if all was ok!

@Hillwalker what happened if you don’t mind me asking?
