Just wanted to learn what people's experiences of Hammond under stairs storage were, and what sort of cost bracket they were in?

I’m in the same boat wanted to find out others experiences. I’ve had one quote not Hammond’s for £2000 not sure if that’s high!

We did Hammond's for 4500£ in August: handleless doors, pull-out shoe racks, internal drawers, shelves, coat racks, lined cupboards. Took 2 months start to finish, with 2 full days of installation. That includes design, measurements, project 3D visualisation and revisions. We've also seen other companies but even though those were less pricey, the lower quality of materials was evident - very light particle board as main material and lamination coming off on samples, all hinges flimsy and rattling. Hammond's use furniture boards, which are quite heavy and hinges/mechanisms are sturdy and smooth.

did you get a quote? I don’t want to book a design visit before I have any idea of pricing!!

Has anyone tried one of the cheaper ones, like fittingly?

yomellamoHelly · 08/09/2024 12:36

I'd love something like this!
Do you know what happens if you currently have a wall under the stairs? Do they knock it out so they can install the cupboards?

Mum2Fergus · 08/09/2024 12:39

I had my usual builder do mine...entirely custom built to spec...£950.

Was that recently and what was it made of, does it have pullouts? I was thinking similar, ask my builder to quote it. I thought it would be more expensive, but maybe not!

GasPanic · 09/09/2024 10:32

Sounds expensive to me.

I mean, if you are looking to have understair storage, then its because you don't have enough space. And a better way to get more space is to move house.

I have just opened up the dead space under my stairs in a new build and it is large. So there are opportunities there. I reckon I will be able to DIY the lot for under £500 with a simple door rather than fancy pull out racks etc. I am not sure I would want to spend K extra just to get pull out stuff. It's the kind of job ideal for the DIYer, for example just involves some simple woodwork and almost certainly no structural stuff involved.

Each to their own I guess.

Just to update, I got a quote from my builder. He said a simple two door configuration would be roughly £800. More for a shaker profile. Pullouts would be a lot more:

I got a quote from Fittingly for paintable doors and it was £1.8k.

I'd like the pullouts but they look a lot more expensive. I'm now trying to think of if I can partition it off and make one walk in storage and one with a door for shoes and dog/child stuff etc
