PAYG meter credit when moving

I am selling my flat, it has PAYG meters for gas and electric, about £250 in credit. I can get this refunded but I feel bad about my buyer suddenly having the meters go to zero and I do not mind him using the credit BUT my supplier told me that if he uses my credit, it will then be taken back as debt next time he tops up as it was from before he owned the property. Is this true? They are not smart meters.

I do not want the energy company to profit from the credit so if no one can use it I will take the refund but if he can use it that would be fine.

Or, even better, can they actually switch the meter to zero remotely? Can I get the refund and he can still use the credit too?!

The company will send him new meter keys, I know this is so he does not take on my debt but what about if it is in credit? I guess the first time he puts in a new key the credit will wipe.

Has anyone got any experience or inside knowledge on this?

Thanks!
