Storage units for sentimental items and clothes

We are planning on selling our house, travelling for a while, then buying a new property. While we are selling then travelling, we will need to store some sentimental items (photos, baby boxes etc) and our winter wardrobes and “fancy” clothing like nice dresses, shoes and jackets. We don’t plan on storing many big items like sofas or beds, I’m hoping to really get rid of a lot of stuff.

I’ve read that these sort of items would be better in a climate controlled storage unit but I’m struggling to find one near me. Then I wondered if the advice was more applicable to America and my precious and clothing items would be ok in a regular storage unit packed carefully in plastic boxes?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

the worry is about extremes of temperature - both hot and cold. visit a storage unit near you and ask them what temperature range they get.

good plastic boxes with mothballs inside and labels on the outside have always worked well enough for us.

I agree to choose your storage carefully, and get climate control if you can. I didn't, and have just unpacked my books - freezing cold and some of the pages have crinkled.

Also check out the fire situation - someone on MSE lost all their possessions in storage to a fire.
