Essex house with ‘dated brown windows and awful decor’ …

JulieRtn · 22/01/2023 10:28

… has now had two offers at asking price. Thankfully there are some intelligent viewers out there who can somehow manage to see past wallpaper, mirrors, flowers, furniture and candles which may not be exactly to their taste 👍

OP posts:

Assume you're the OP from that thread? If so, congratulations Smile

Some people were really sticking the boot in, just wanting to be nasty about someone else's choices and taste. No surprise that the offers have come in, it's a lovely house.

What on earth is that supposed to mean?

LivelyBlake · 22/01/2023 10:36

Fantastic, wishing you good luck with the sale!

LiteralSycamore · 22/01/2023 10:41

I assume this is in relation to another thread, OP, but it doesn’t surprise me at all. I think Mn just likes ‘staging my house for sale’ threads and often goes ridiculously over the top in terms of total repaint, removing all personal items, fresh flowers etc, when in fact people, or enough people, see past surface stuff. I’ve sold houses in three countries without ever doing more than a good clean and some paint retouching where absolutely necessary. Similarly, I’ve bought houses with ghastly decor and neglect.

SoupDragon · 22/01/2023 10:44

Thing is, OP, you were the one who asked about having no/few offers so you were the one who had concerns to start with 🤷🏻‍♀️

If I remember the thread correctly, there was even mention of re rendering the outside!!!

BarbaraofSeville · 22/01/2023 10:46

Exactly @LiteralSycamore

And then when someone on MN buys a house, they immediately have to rip out all the fixtures and fittings and redecorate to their own exact taste, because it's utterly impossible to 'have' to live with wallpaper that was chosen by someone else or is deemed 'dated', which seems to mean has been up for more than about six months or is in a style that is in any way popular.

YukoandHiro · 22/01/2023 10:46

Oh so glad to hear it OP. What changed? Did you get a new agent?

BarbaraofSeville · 22/01/2023 10:47

Oh, and good luck with the sale OP, I remember your thread and was shocked at some of the responses (or not really, due to aforementioned levels of ridiculousness).

middleager · 22/01/2023 10:51

So pleased. I saw that thread - it was harsh. You have a lovely house, which I'd grab in a heartbeat - all that space, location.

My last house had brown framed windows and mock beams and lots of other "outdated" features, which might be why it was on the market, but which enabled us to buy our lovely home.

DressingForRevenge · 22/01/2023 10:51

Good for you! I thought your house was lovely and the idea of doing a total reno just to sell? 😂 There must’ve been some confusion there between “wanting to sell the house” and “what would you change to make it your personal dream?”.

Fingers crossed the sale goes though without complication and well done for taking it all on the chin! 👊

LakeTiticaca · 22/01/2023 11:05

Surely the idea of buying a house is the structural soundness, size of house and location. If it's habitable it can be done up a room at a time. Don't folk do that anymore?

Judging by the other thread, no they don't. People were suggesting changing the windows, changing the colour of the render, painting over or removing the wallpaper and changing the furniture...

Littlechickenhead · 22/01/2023 11:08

Link please?

CellophaneFlower · 22/01/2023 11:10

Pleased to hear it OP. Anyone reading the comments before clicking the link would have been expecting to see something totally different. Someone even said it wasn't liveable in it's current condition if I recall correctly 😂

Hope everything goes smoothly.

lljkk · 22/01/2023 11:11

Fantastic, I always said it was a nice property as is.

AmIreallyBeverly · 22/01/2023 11:11

People were horrible on that thread.

I hope it goes well for you.

LakeTiticaca · 22/01/2023 11:12

@Dontslipontheice I believe estate agents advise against doing too much, just a good clean and declutter. My nextdoor neighbour is selling and she wanted to redecorate the very old fashioned bedrooms. EA told her not to waste her time

Don't forget they'd have to factor in new kitchen and bathrooms (absolutely nothing wrong with them) as they wouldn't be able to afford to do it themselves, what with having to pay private school fees.

ThePear · 22/01/2023 11:18

Lots of posts on that thread were distressed over the OPs kitchen skirting board lights 😄 saying they couldn’t even look at the photos because of them, couldn’t see the kitchen because of them, they wouldn’t even go to view a house if they saw the lights in a listing. It was mortifying to read.

Seriously? 😀

Can someone link?

I admit to having a slight weakness for those threads which, as a pp said, feature posters unable to distinguish between ‘sensibly presenting a house for sale’ and ‘everything I would do to make this my Property Supplement-style dream home’.

Absolutely, estate agents have only ever counselled doing less rather than more in my experience.

Its the reason I see this site as entertainment only!!

Either posters like that are making it up for drama = entertainment

Or, they really are completely mad and ridiculous and spend their life living like that = entertainment

BeatriceBatchelor · 22/01/2023 11:22

Congratulations, OP.

I have recently sold two properties of late elderly relatives. One was in a particularly poor state. All estate agents were adamant "do nothing, well get it sold". And they did, without me adding a rug or stunt pineapples.
