How hard is it to make a worksurface from a sheet of veneer?

Cos I just found this www.laminateandply.com/shop/laminate-sheets/formica-algea-f8796-matte58-h-p-laminate-3050x1300x0-8mm/

And I love it!!

But my builder is on holiday and I won't ask him - chatting on WhatsApp about the beach pics he posted and planning what snacks he wants when he comes is fine but bilding/kitchen questions have to stay in my head!

For £750 for 3m

The veneer is £115 for 2 lengths of 3m (but the edges and base will add some.....but possibly not £600 worth? Maybe?

I'd need 3 x £750 or 2 x £115 (allowing for the edging - roughly worked out)

So I could afford to have it for the splashback too

Good to see you Katy!

how's the show van/caravan project going?

I have no idea how about turning the laminate into a work surface, but my thoughts are that I'd ring the laminate supplier, the tend to be pretty helpful. The back is primed, so that's a start. You'd need to be very careful to get the right product for underneath & it would need to be incredibly smooth or every little bump would show!

it's an expensive laminate bought ore made, so I can see why you're trying to do it yourself.

if anyone can, you can!!

I wondered about putting it on square edged cheaper worktop - which would help with the smoothness

The caravan is perfect - I am speaking to someone about an awning at the end of the month

You will need good quality contact adhesive and lots of it if you're doing a large top. Getting a thicker to formica to bend can be a bit tricky, it would be easier with a square edge. I put the top on first with an overhang the width of the formica, then stick the edge on after and file it flat. Here's a picture of mine.

Thanks @species5618 that's how I was remembering my dad doing it!

His were more complicated as he was boat refurbishing and needing loads of clamps as the hull curved

Ideally I'll pay someone to do it 😉
