Alternative to Stair Carpet

I have now decided that stair carpet is the enemy. It attracts so much dirt. It is a horrible colour, sheds fluff and looks tatty even when cleaned thoroughly.

I would like to remove it entirely, but concerned about two things.

Noise - carpet does make things quieter. If I use wood instead, it could be loud?

Safety - basically it must be easier to slip on wood stairs?

I would be really interested to know how do other posters find having uncarpeted stairs? What did you use instead?

My intention would probably be to clad the steps; the remainder of the staircase is sound.

We still have these on our stairs, we are mid renovation so they do the job.

It wouldn’t surprise me if these have have been down since it was built ( 79 ) as it dosnt look like anything else has ever been on the stairs.

The risers are half open and the carpet is just on the tread and the nosing.
