EON Boiler installation nightmare!!!

Gas engineer (Surrey Plumbers Ltd (based in Chessington) subcontracted by EON to install a new boiler exaggerated a potential issue into an issue to do unnecessary work for more money. This would result in taking out our brand new ground floor to fit new bigger diameter gas pipes to the boiler.

EON pulled out and subcontractor offered to do the work for an additional price (£3000 + 600). At the time I accepted and foolishly fully paid in advance. This was after delays after delays with winter coming and with 1 year old DS.

Still further delays and excuses. The boiler was finally installed and working but still temporarily and illegally using thinner pipes in the ground floor. I am still waiting…
Given the gas engineer is so relaxed on not having to replace the gas pipe ASAP questioned whether the pipes were really needed. So I recently paid an independent gas engineer to check and find out this additional work was BS!!!
I am absolutely furious with this disgustingly deceitful engineer but also with EON for using him. Are there no vetting??? The independent engineer noted he hasn't even done safety checks after installation which is a legal requirement.
It's now been a month since the boiler was installed. The reason I haven't been chasing the gas engineer is that "his mother has passed away". I don't believe him but it's too sensitive to gamble.

The plan is to write him a polite letter to say that an independent gas engineer has confirmed the gas pressure to be acceptable. And therefore would like to get a refund of the difference between EONs price and his price. Also, to finish off the work which has made the house unsafe.

If he doesn’t cooperate then i will report him to the Gas Safety Register as recommended by the independent engineer.

I will also demand compensation from EON for introducing this engineer that has caused so much pain.

Any thoughts?

Not sure it's EONs fault as they pulled out and it was your choice independent of them after that to continue with this person.

I wouldn’t just report him if he cooperates. He’s dangerous. He needs reporting whatever.
have you ever wondered what causes these house explosions that are on the news a couple of times a year? Always gas, always dodgy workmanship.

Also yes I'd def report regardless, as PP said.

I would get the money back and then report him anyway. If he doesn't give you the money back I'd report him, start a small claim, get the independent engineer to write an expert witness statement with his credentials and wait for the system to work through the claim.

I had 3x people to quote me on my boiler.

2 were independents. One said I needed a gas feed upgrade which would have been an extra 2K. This was rubbish. Another wanted to drain the condensate directly into the soakaway.

I finally went with BG. Because they correctly identified all the install issues. Their install went smoothly. The guy was very professional. All the stuff happened like clockwork from the boiler arriving, old one taken away, electrician installation, rubbish pick up the next day from BIFFA. They sorted out all the regulatory documentation and gas safe registration and gave a free 1 year check.

So next time you think BG are expensive, think about whether or not the independent price covers the amount of chasing around you need to do because the proper regulation hasn't been done, or it turns out your boiler install wasn't done by a gas registered tech after all.

My guess is BOXT offer a similar quality service to BG.

OP, sorry to hear about your issues.
