What order should we do this work in?

We are now ready to get our hall stairs and landing - including staircase, skirting boards and lots of doors redecorated. We also want the downstairs refloored with Karndean. DH says to get the floor done first as they will probably cause some knocks and scratches to the skirting boards so we will have to sort that out anyway. I think that it would be better to get the painting done first for a better finish where the skirting board joins the floor and also because I’d worry about spillage even if the professionals are very careful. What do others think?

Expert advice is actually floors first these days for the reason your husband says. Knocks to walls/skirting boards etc. Paining is a finishing touch job.

If you are repainting the landing walls and ceiling then I'd most likely start there as those high areas are tricky to reach.

I'd definitely lay the floor ahead of painting the skirting. You can also potentially remove the skirting and doors and paint them either off-site or in the garden, which could reduce the mess.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the advice, DH is right again! This does make life easier as flooring takes 3weeks wait whereas a painter and decorator is likely to have quite a waiting list.
