Painting over wallpaper - prep needed?

Would I be right in thinking that if you’re painting over wallpaper then the only prep that’s possible is just to make sure as far as possible that it’s all stuck down flat?

As you can’t wet it or sand it etc?

It will look awful, better off taking the wallpaper down first and doing it properly but that's just my opinion.

Oh absolutely in an ideal world we would take it down but we can't afford to have all the walls re-plastered at the moment so a lick of paint will have to do. It won't look awful.

I did and it was fine. Provided the paper underneath is well glued it won't be an issue. It may bubble initially but these will go down
