This is a very small thing and maybe it's just me with bad taste but I'm curious whether there's any plus over having vertical blinds over horizontal ones?

On the street we are moving to everyone bar one house has white vertical blinds and I honestly hate them. I told DH I want horizontal wooden blinds, he's cool with that but also queried why everyone else uses the vertical ones

Definitely wooden horizontal blinds. We have them in our living room and love them. They give us privacy, keep the sun out and look really lovely. I hate the vertical blinds, they look like office blinds to me. Not at all homely. No idea why they’re so popular.

Crackstone · 04/01/2023 08:30

Vertical blinds are extremely dated.

iknowimcoming · 04/01/2023 08:30

Vertical blinds should be outlawed imo - bloody awful things, I hate them! I know that wasn't what you asked sorry!

Ugh, I hate those vertical blinds. Always remind me of a dentist surgery! I never understand why someone would want them in their home

CellophaneFlower · 04/01/2023 10:42

I think vertical blinds are really unpopular and far more people inherit them and put up with them rather than choose to have them fitted! This is me by the way... they'll be gone as soon as I decorate!

They are better than roman blinds imo, as you can control light/privacy better, but far uglier. Good quality wooden venetians offer the same versatility and are much easier on the eye.

lobsterkiller · 04/01/2023 11:08

I have a house with vertical blinds. I inherited them when I bought the house. I've emailed a local blind company to measure up as I can't bear them any more.

My neighbours have beautiful shutters but they're well out of my price range.

Ilovetocrochet · 04/01/2023 11:15

Plantation shutters for me! Best purchase I made last year.

SnowyKitty · 04/01/2023 11:17

I think the vertical blinds are horrible sorry. They’re very popular in NI (where we have family) for some reason.

I like the look but what about when your windows open inwards? Doesn’t it mean they are then useless

MaggieFS · 04/01/2023 13:08

Maybe they all have them from an era when the houses were built?

I agree with pp about the dislike of verticals.

Ah, my windows open outwards so not a problem! The blinds themselves are on hinges and open inwards so you would at least be able to open your window a couple of inches until it hits the blind as the blinds are not fitted flush to the window.

I love them but did they cost an arm and a leg?

ginghamstarfish · 04/01/2023 15:28

Vertical are really dated, and if I see them up in a house I assume it's elderly people living there. MIL has them and they're horrible dust-gathering things. Blinds of whatever kind are better and more practical if they go up and down one would think.

FuckabethFuckor · 04/01/2023 15:31

I dislike any blind that has to be dusted. Roman blinds all the way for me.

I just don't like the way you're either in darkness or fully exposed with a roman. There's no in between!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 04/01/2023 18:29

Vertical blinds make me think of a provincial surveyors office.

I'm in my 60s and think they're awful. I have a friend - quite a bit younger than me - who has them so I can't say that around her. 😂

CellophaneFlower · 04/01/2023 18:53

I have them and my next door neighbour has the same ones. The previous owner of my house lived next door first, so I'm guessing they install them as they move around 🙈

caramac04 · 04/01/2023 19:00

I can’t stand verticals. Not so keen on my current day/night blinds either now. I quite fancy the perfect fit blinds as you can have any or all of the window covered. As in you can have the lower half of the window covered and full light at the top or vice versa.

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/01/2023 19:06

Vertical blinds are dreadful and I’m not young.

Venetian blinds are OK, but they need dusting a lot. We’ve gradually replaced some Venetians with better ones, one Roman blind in my craft room and Zebra blinds in the family room which looks over the garden and isn’t overlooked. They’re easy to clean with the hand held bit of the vacuum cleaner.

Crackstone · 04/01/2023 19:21

Even my 90 yo FIL has recently taken down his vertical blinds because they’re too old fashioned!

Vertical are cheap and relatively practical. Horizontal are more stylish.

Badleg87 · 05/01/2023 07:46

Thank you everyone, I was trying not to insult vertical blinds too much but I do think they're awful looking!

I imagine a few of the neighbours are elderly which may have an influence on their blind choice, some have probably been up for years. I can't wait to get in and put some nice wooden blinds in

Also hate vertical blinds. I once lived in a rented flat with massive windows, including a whole side of the living room, with vertical blinds throughout. The flat was lovely but the blinds were terrible and I now have an aversion to them. Even hate the ones in our office. Nasty flappy things they are.

My DM, who was 83 when she died, also loathed them so it's not really an age thing, maybe a fashion-never-to-return thing.

dubyalass · 05/01/2023 08:42

I don't understand the vertical blind thing either - we have them in our office and they're fine there but I find them oddly impersonal in a house, like the rest of the house will have pleather sofas, magnolia walls and nothing to indicate that anyone with a personality lives there.

That probably makes me sound like a massive snob.
