Never received my share of the house

Hi Everyone,

Long story short, my dad died when I was 11, he left part of the house to me and my sisters. Flash forward to when I was 19, my sister and her boyfriend bought the house off my mum but I never received my share. I believe it was due to some technicality (I possibly remember something about a trust being mentioned, but not sure) and I also remember my sister saying they wouldn’t be able to afford to give me and my sister our share. Basically I never received my share and I will never get it back, does anyone know why this may be?

I was 18 at the time so was very naive and it definitely was not explained in depth at all and I didn’t know the repercussions of it. Now I’m older I’m starting to feel increasingly annoyed and blindsided about the whole thing. I actually feel quite devastated to be honest.

I would just like to know if there may be a reason for this, it was all handled by solicitors so was all legit.

Were you a named beneficiary in his will or was your share just a verbal arrangement he had with your mum?

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 03/01/2023 00:12

How long ago was all this? If the solicitors in question are still there can you approach them as a start? What does your mum say? Can either of your sisters explain any more?

It was definitely more than a verbal agreement, I assume I was a beneficiary.

Can you get hold of a copy of the will?

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 03/01/2023 00:22

You can search for probate records here www.gov.uk/search-will-probate as a starting point.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 03/01/2023 00:23

First step is to get a copy of the will. You can search for it here:

www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

Unfortunately no results are showing on the gov.uk site for his will/probate.

Are you searching the right Year as probate can take months?

Maybe the property went to your mum and she gifted it to your sister? Can you ask her what happened?

Ask your mum and sister?
