Where can I live?

Another one of these threads I hope people will want to comment, if not I might try AIBU for blatant traffic?

I need 3 bed semi or end of terrace for £280k, not willing/able to do much work on it. I want to be within an hour or so of central London as I'll have to commute at least a couple of times a month, with good parks and dog walks in a "leafy" environment with nice shops and a decent hospital, within say 20 mins walking distance of a mainline station. Ideally very close to countryside walks as well - only other "want" is that its multicultural, don't want to be stuck in a "white British" style area.

I'm initially thinking Midlands e.g, Leicester to London is just over an hour? Where else? Or am I having a laugh with that long list?!

Leicester is lush. If it was by the sea it would be perfect for me. I lived there 8 years it has cheap housing stock, nice city centre with loads of culture and it's v multi cultural.

Perhaps Basingstoke. It’ll be tricky on that budget anywhere within an hour of London imo. Crawley might be worth a shout, I’m not really clued up on prices there, but it’s definitely more affordable than most places.

Medway towns another possibility.

Don’t know too much about north of London but those are my recommendations for south.

I'd say Leicester too.
Where I live has most of your things but not very multi cultural which I found hard to adjust too when we first moved here (to be near family). It is changing slowly.

Maybe use the BBC

'House price calculator: Where can I afford to rent or buy?'
Pop in your budget, wants etc and see which places come up on the map.

Peterborough?

Greenfairydust · 03/01/2023 00:28

Folkestone: about an hour to Kings Cross.

Are you living in the same Leicester as me? the city centre is an absolutely unsafe dump. having said that I live just outside of the city and Leicestershire has some lovely parts, lovely places to walk- Bradgate park, Beacon Hill, Swithland woods all lovely. A small 3 bed where I live just north of Leicester is around £280k, probably cheaper in some parts of the city centre.

I should also add, my area is quite multi-cultural, lots of asian families moving to the area as close to the Golden Mile of asian shops and restaurants, also a few eastern European families. The area I live in has a few decent shops, cafes, retaurants and a good community feel.

How about Northampton?

handbagsandholidays · 03/01/2023 00:43

@Babyroobs Parts of Evington village, Great Glen, Thurnby Lodge, Stoneygate and Oadby are lovely! I live in Yorkshire but wouldn't mind moving to Leicester if the opportunity arose.

Yes they are all lovely areas but really unlikely to be in op's budget unless I am very out of touch !

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 03/01/2023 01:32

Thank you all - I know Ashford and Folkestone areas and I reckon Leicester is nicer, DD went to uni there and I like Narborough Road area coming into the town centre - so I think I have unusual tastes?! Oadby keeps coming up in searches too.

@RuthW I seem to be spoilt for choice in Northampton, but is there anywhere in particular you would recommend?

Long Buckby is a very large village with a station.

In Northampton the train station is in the town centre so you are limited if you want a 20 min walk. Probably St James, Delapre or even just outside town centre.

Other nice places such as Duston, Hunsbury and Kingsthorpe are nice but a short bus ride from the station.
