Renovating Bathroom Ourselves

Jessesgirl13 · 26/12/2022 13:37

We're about to start renovating our family bathroom ourselves. We've got all the materials/suite etc and we're not relocating any aspects of it. Are we mad though to do this ourselves? We really cant afford to pay thousands for labour at the minute and DH feels confident he can do the work (he's done tiling/plumbing repairs on our old place). But everyone we mention it to seems to think we're crazy! Confused

Anyone else done their own bathroom reno before? Any tips welcome!

I would get a qualified plumber and electrician in to do their relevant bits but you could absolutely do the rest yourselves.

Reugny · 26/12/2022 13:39

So your DH knows how to safely plumb in a toilet?

Allsnotwell · 26/12/2022 13:39

We did our own bar the plumbing - had it signed off and checked by a local plumber - 1 hour labour. We also go a tiler as I’m not that great at it!

It’s not that difficult once you’ve cleared the room.

Saved an absolute fortune!!

Do it! Most to the time in sourcing and building the suite.

Safely plumb in a toilet?
we’ve done the bathroom in the last two houses, no explosions yet.

CatherinedeBourgh · 26/12/2022 13:42

I've done this (x7, actually), and if you're not moving anything around there really is not that much to it.

Remove existing appliances, strip, make good, retile, paint, plumb in new appliances.

Caspianberg · 26/12/2022 13:42

I think crazy tbh. If you make an error in plumbing it’s a potential disaster with leaks and tiling can’t be fixed if rubbish.

We have done all the demolition ourselves of old one, tiles out, etc to save costs, and have renovated tiny toilet room ourselves but that just toilet only and not tiled.

CatherinedeBourgh · 26/12/2022 13:43

She doesn't need to plumb the toilet if she's not moving its location, btw.

DH renovated a bathroom here. Took his time and did it really well. Saved us thousands. He’s really good at DIY though and has proper tools which make a big difference.

In the middle of it now. Dh not a plumber. Room is stripped. Lots of YouTube. We will probably get a tiler. Paying for it was not an option. We have other bathrooms so it can take as long as it takes. Ish.

Woeman · 26/12/2022 13:54

Also, it os quite normal. When we speak to people, they've often done it themselves.

C4tastrophe · 26/12/2022 16:16

Doing a bathroom is pretty simple if everything is already in the correct place.
Using very large tiles makes life easier as well.

Go for it. You'll learn on the job and be excellently educated for future houses. Youtube has videos on everything.

Thanks Everyone! We have an ensuite and downstairs loo so we can make sure we take our time with it!
