Outdoor washing machine cabinet

I'm thinking of moving my washing machine outside so I can fit a dishwasher in my small kitchen. Does anyone know of good watertight outside storage which could work as a safe cabinet for the machine?

The pipes are at risk of bursting if the outside temp drops below 0 so I would think it probably isn't a good idea unless you can put it somewhere which is heated.

Oh blimey, I'm a dufus! I didn't think of that! Well, that's that then! I wish I had the money to build a small conservatory or side return. Alas...

Mine is outside in a shed. The pipes are lagged and it doesn't burst but it did freeze for two days in this last cold snap. We've got a wooden bike shed with the washer and a freezer in.

Ours survived outside for 2+ years in an unheated, open-sided outbuilding when we first purchased our current house as we didn't want it in the kitchen. The pipes weren't even lagged (as it was only intended to be temporary but took that time to create a dedicated laundry space 🙄), but we had no issues thankfully.

Ours was also fine outside in a block built shed with no heating - for 6 years and including the beast from the east 😀

Ours has been moved to the garage. Pipes all lagged so nothing bursts, however that really cold weather we had the other week meant we had no washing machine for two days, as the outlet drain pipe to the old kitchen sink we put in next to the washer froze so we couldn't turn the machine on it had no where to drain. But has only happened twice in 8 years so was worth putting in the garage.

A keter outside shed box lined with insulation panels and lagged piping might be ok. Not tried it for a washing machine but worked fine for a tumble dryer for 7 years.
Although our neighbour has her washing machine in a lean-to style conservatory and has gone through at least 2 machines in 5 years. No idea if that is due to abuse or freezing pipes. They do have a history of failing electrical appliances.

Is there room in the bathroom, or could you remove the wash hand basin, and have a cabinet built with a square flat bottomed wash hand basin, and a clothes drier over the bath

Beach1983 · 25/12/2022 22:59

We have a brick outhouse which I’m currently renovating so it can be an outside utility room to made room for a dishwasher in the kitchen, I’ve been advised to put a small greenhouse heater down near the pipes to prevent them from freezing!

Also think of the electrical electronic bits in damp weather?

May effect the life of the machine

Pipes etc and freezing - As above, good idea to lag them plus have stop valves inserted 👍👍

Diyextension · 26/12/2022 14:52

We had ours in an unheated detached garage for about 15 years, I did lag the pipes but the waste u bend did freeze once. The only problem I found was in winter you could get mould on the rubber seal around the door and mould in the powder tray.

Do you have room under the stairs you could put it there rather than outside?

EMGEMG · 26/12/2022 18:50

I like this idea! Do you mean something like this?

If you are asking me about the picture, then yes, that is extremely modern and sleek looking - the whole bathroom is totally modern - it looks very nice.

I think in my bathroom as it’s older, I would get a cabinet to match the bath panel and have a door on the front of it.

But the picture looks stunning and I hope it works for you xxx

Thanks.
This wouldn't look like my bathroom - my budget is way too meagre! Hehehe.
But I've never seen a basin on top of a washing machine, so I'm excited by the prospect of this!
