Cutting divan bed in two to fit??

We recently bought a super king divan, the type where the bottom part and the mattress splits in two but can be zipped to fit together. Unfortunately we didn't get a staircase check and the divan part (when separate) won't fit up our stairs :(. But the bed company and the deliverers both said this wasn't a problem, they would just have to cut each piece in half (so that the divan would be in four pieces??) at the factory and that it would take around six weeks and cost £250 and apparently this is quite common. Has anyone heard of/done this? It seems really odd and I can't work out if they were taking the piss or not!

I don’t suppose they would have a price, and the ability, to do it if it wasn’t a thing & this company has them in 4 parts anyway. It won’t affect the integrity of the base, normal double divans are split top end and bottom end anyway, it will just be a case of where they put extra wood supports and the metal joining clips I suppose.
