London-based interior designer recommendations

Can anyone recommend an interior designer in London? I am looking to undertake a full overhaul of my new house, and while I'm certain that I would like to engage an interior designer I am not sure where to start in terms of finding one. I have tried googling (obviously) but there is just way too much choice (I don't know where to start sifting through them) and it tends to be mainly the very big names who come up.

The property in question is an early-Victorian townhouse with lots of original features still intact, so I'd be looking for a designer who'd make the most of these. I'd probably go for a fairly traditional design but with some modern and eclectic touches. I'd want to predominantly furnish it with antique/vintage furniture (some of which I already own, and some yet to be acquired) so I'd want someone who is used to working in that way rather than just buying furniture all new.

If anyone could offer up some links to people they've engaged or have considered engaging, or offer any other thoughts on choosing an interior designer, I'd be grateful for them.

Fiona Duke is amazing, she’s Essex based but I wonder if she’ll take on London projects

Stella Mannering is Oxfordshire based, but I know she’s done London projects

RG Interiors (Instagram.com/rginteriors.uk)
Jessica Cavaree - in Hertfordshire but I think she does London too (Instagram.com/jcavareeinteriors)

Not me, but people I’d trust enough to recommend.

Sorry about the link fail 🫣

I can highly recommend Jade Butcher, previously worked for Little Greene and has just won a number of awards! Her style sounds exactly what you're after and does from just colour consulting to full interior design and room restructure dependant on your needs.

Thank you for all these thoughts. I've googled some of the suggestions and some definitely look like the sort of person I'd be after.

Looking through Houzz seems to be a common way of finding designers, although there’s still a bit of a needle in a haystack issue.

I have seen houses done by Annie Shepard and they've been lovely - haven't engaged her myself but if we ever get a proper house I would like a shot.

Does anyone have a ballpark figure on how much any of these interior designers might charge to design a 1100 sq ft property?

Does lovely designs whilst maintaining original features of older properties

We used House By Kate - www.housebykate.com for a full renovation of our London Victorian semi. She was amazing! Honestly couldn’t recommend her enough. She came up with so many great ideas and ways to use the space that I’d just never have thought of. We wanted it to feel contemporary but whilst enhancing all the original features and she did that so well.

This isn’t particularly helpful, but I think it massively depends on what service you require and also whether the designer is a “big name” or not. If you just want a basic concept and colour scheme you could be talking a few hundred pounds. If you would like a full service with numerous site visits, everything specified (and potentially even ordered on your behalf), and something approaching project management of the final stages of your project then you would be talking several thousand pounds.

I should add, to avoid confusion amongst other posters on this thread, that I am basing this on interior designers I have engaged in different contexts elsewhere in the country (I am still looking for one for my own home).

Regarding pricing, most designers charge a percentage of overall budget for which they are responsible. They will advise and source items like soft furnishings, furniture, lamps. If you want them to be responsible for internal decorations/joinery etc, then again it's a percentage of the budget you are spending, plus hourly rates for assistants and milage and travel time costs. I think about 15% of your overall budget (think 10% plus expenses plus vat).

NellyBarney · 16/01/2023 19:17

For a fairly smal budget, overall percentage might be higher, so an established designer would charge 20% of 50k, but only 10% of 200k budget, to style a 100sqm house, if that makes sense.
