What d'you make of these roof trusses?

I saw this property in another thread and was really surprised by the roof trusses in the loft/bedroom. My first thought is that this roof is an illegal conversion to living space though that may not be the case. I'm wondering what the cut-outs are in the trusses? Maybe it was wood recycled from some other place & it already had the cut-outs? I'd be interested if anyone has any knowledge.

i think someone has fitted them for a decorative feature, no way are they part of the roof structure. Some people have strange tastes.

Looking again, I'm not sure the loft even has legal height. I'm now wondering whether the owner cut the wood to give it that rustic chalet look...

Awful. Hope they're not structural. Building regs stipulate minimum cross section size based on load and Asian for trusses etc so could soon check if they were acceptable or not if you needed too. Hopefully just cosmetic so you can take them out. 😬

They are cosmetic (and ugly in my opinion) and wouldn't do anything to support the ceiling or roof.
That roof will have a big steel beam at the apex, and maybe others elsewhere.
Regarding the headroom the only regulation is above the stairs and landing. The actual loft itself doesn't need any particular headroom.
In typical loft conversions a trick commonly used is to put the velux above the stairs to get the extra headroom at that point.

They are fugly. You can see from the depth of the plasterboard around the window recesses that there is plenty of space behind the plasterboarded roof for more substantial roof rafters - either side of the windows there will be wooden rafters to fix the window casement to. Get someone to check it out of you are an interested buyer.
