Wool or polypropylene carpet?

I am recarpeting the 1st floor hallway and stairs up to the loft conversion. Currently hallway is bare boards and stairs have awful sisal carpet.

Trying to decide between wool carpet or polypropylene.

Things that make me think wool is better:

  • there is a heavy chest that sits in the hallway
  • longer lasting
  • no nasty chemicals

Things that make me think polypropylene is better:

  • there are carpet beetles and clothes moths in the loft right now. They haven't destroyed the current sisal carpet up there but I'd be worried about wool
  • cheaper
  • better colours available

The loft level is going to have a hard floor so the beetles won't be an issue up there any more but I don't want to give them a nice new home in the stairs.

Any advice?

Wool but only if there are no moths and you don't live in London (Moth City). Polypropylene otherwise, sorry. Been there, done that.

That is what I thought - the insects rule out wool. How sad.

Not wool. My wool carpets were wrecked in less than six months by moths. I didn’t notice at first -they munched under the sofa, and progressed to under the rug, and then the darker parts of the stairs.

I have wool mix on my stairs...still looking pristine 2 years later ....I live NW England....just hoover once a week

The moths have eaten huge areas of our wool carpet. They also reduced some lovely wool rugs that were stored in a chest to a pile of dust. I won’t be having a wool carpet again.

Also no wool if you have a thatched roof because of bugs 🙁 I was saddened to learn this when we chose carpets.

Moths absolutely destroyed our wool
carpets. You'd be crazy to get wool knowing you already have them in the house.

Thank you - you have confirmed what I already knew but was struggling to accept 🙄😂
I'll console myself with the upsides of polypropylene

I've always been a wool advocate but a very good quality short pile polypropylene one has changed my mind. It's great and washes well , too. I hear short pile matters because they flatten easily.

At least 80% wool Berber, never heard of moths being an issue for carpets, but I’m in the North and we only get the odd one in the summer flickering against the big light 😀

I think polypropylene carpets are hideous. Sorry, but if you are plagued by moths I guess needs must.

my biggest carpet problem is the bloody cat and their claws.
