Tell me about your American fridge/freezers

I grew up with small under counter ones and DH and I have an integrated one that is set too tall by the previous owners that I can barely see/reach the top shelf so new kitchen refurb is being done in the spring and I'm insisting we have an American style fridge freezer. We have 2DS and I'm planning ahead for when they're big strapping teenagers and eat constantly so wanted the space (and ice on tap for gin!)
Do you have the drawer style freezer bit or the ones where there are 2 long doors. Anyone have the ones that open up like 2 cupboard doors for the fridge bit at the top. Are the water dispenser and ice cube bit worth the extra cost? Thanks

Mine has changed my life...I love it. I have the top section with the fridge and the bottom section has two large pull out freezer drawers. Don't have ice but do have the water dispenser. I think I'd actually like the ice but the cold water is enough for me. It's brilliant having lots of fridge space. Even things like having two large bottles of milk in there means I don't have to go and buy a quick emergency bottle when we run out. I can also leave pre prepared plates of food in there to be heated up for dinner.

in this case, the one on the left is the freezer and the right is a fridge. Advantage is that, if one breaks then all is not lost

we’ve just bought a fisher and paykel French fridge freezer with a wide fridge at the top and a freezer drawer. We love it. FandP don’t stick out as far as some. We went for handleless design so there it’s as shallow as possible. My teenage loves the ice and water dispenser. But we had a nightmare when we discovered that the water filter is external. And requires mounting in a cupboard - check before you buy

Mine's double door fridge at the top, freezer drawers at the bottom! It's great I love it!

I got one this year, for 20 previous years I’d never had a freezer.

I read loads of reviews and so many said don’t go for the side-by-side. Mainly that the shelves made it difficult.

Ended up going for this - which I think is called French larder-style. I love it. The double doors for the fridge space are great (keep stuff used regularly on the right-hand side so that only need to use one door most of the time. And the six drawers in the freezer are great too - can really organise stuff, so I’m not rooting around aimlessly when I want to find something. I know which drawer has frozen meat, veg, beige food, batch-cooked portions etc.

Not going to lie, I was nervous about going with a brand I didn’t really know. But it had good reviews and I’m happy with my choice and the difference in price.

It doesn’t have a water or ice dispenser, but they weren’t must-haves here. Can easily have a jug of water in the fridge and am happy with a bag of ice cubes in the freezer. Plus, more room in the fridge doors for storage, rather than space taken up with a water source.

Thank you everyone I think you've swung me towards a French larder style one

We’d always had small fridges but upgraded and we LOVE ours!! Definitely get the ice dispenser and water dispenser it’s wonderful and really encourages kids to drink more.

We have one with drawes at the bottom and the design is fantastic, fits loads

I have this LG 625l AFF which I absolutely love. It's been discontinued.
The ice / water isn't plumbed but I wanted this as its not positioned close to the sink. As a pp mentioned, my DC help themselves to water all the time.
It can hold lots and I've managed to host parties and christmas with ample fridge space. This feels epic after living with a small FF in the old house.
Although I have a wine fridge I wanted a fridge that had a wine rack too for easy access.
It's one of my favourite new house reno purchases.

We have recently bought a Siemens iQ300.

Specifically went for the double fridge up top, freezer down the bottom layout - and no water/ice maker as in our last machine, we didn't like that the internal bits of the water/ice maker took up a huge amount of fridge and freezer space.

We have one because my DH wanted one.

I will be honest and say that actually our previous arrangement of two full size fridge freezers was just better - fit better in the kitchen because of the depth issue that others mention and more space. I do like the ice and water thing though
