Insulating a floor

Hi everyone, our upstairs floors are really noisy - the kids walking round upstairs sound like elephants stomping (and they are only small kids walking normally). I m not sure if this is because the existing floorboards are really thin - we replaced all carpets and underlay before we moved in a few years ago so all upstairs is carpeted but that doesn’t seem to help with the noise factor. It’s not creaking due to loose floorboards - it’s that anyone walking normally upstairs sounds like they re just about to come through the roof at any moment! This wasn’t an issue at all in previous houses.

in the new year, we are having our master bedroom carpet completely taken up whilst we re do the room, which is a chance to maybe improve the noise between the upstairs and downstairs at least in that room - maybe with better underlay etc. Has anyone had the same problem with noise between floors, and if so, any tips that helped would be really appreciated.
