Landlord did not protect deposit

Myself and DH just moved out of a long term rental. I had asked my landlord for an update regarding the deposit. He advised that he will come back to me next week when he has had the chance to view the property.

It turns out though that he never protected our deposit, where do we stand if he try's to dispute any costs and what can we do here. It was after 2013 so should have definitely been protected.

I got a message from LL tonight to say he had transferred basically 75% of the deposit back to us and detailed why briefly. He was very petty in the message using the word damaged (when in fact it was wear and tear) for silly things like the tilt mechanism on some of the blinds not working. He said about cleanliness but sure he hasn't seen the house at all. In fact when we moved in all those years ago the house was disgusting and we had to deep clean it. Had to laugh at this he did not step foot inside the house in about 6 years because he's so lazy and the past year he couldn't be bothered to fix any issues we raised so they went unfixed. We painted a glossed the whole house before leaving, deep cleaning mattress, floors and the oven using machinery aswell to make sure it was perfect.

I'm not responding but after Christmas I'm going to report him anyways for whatever it's worth.

Not tempted to reply mentioning the lack of safety certificates etc that need reporting? I imagine the remaining 25% might be deposited pretty quickly, and then you should still report him.

im surprised you think this is a good relationship with a LL

tbh I’d reply and let him know how he is operating is not legal, that you’ll be reporting him to the relevant authorities and considering he hasn’t set ft in the house in 6 years he had brass neck cheek to withhold 25% of your deposit

Reporting him to whom?

Lots of people have given you advice. Just wondering why you are not acting on it?you seem strangly passive...

you need to go to court-not doing gas safety inspections is against the law and taking your money for wear and tear also isnt right

tell him you will be taking it further
