Insurance at exchange

Looking for the collective wisdom on this as not done this before. Hoping to exchange today or tomorrow, but not sure which, but when mentioned to bank about insurance (get discount through bank) they said can't insure until exchanged. But I've read elsewhere you're advised to have it in place for exchange. How to I cut the knot? And if I call new insurer as soon as informed of exchange can they start the insurance instantly?
TIA

Yep, you need home insurance when you exchange, your solicitor should have told you that, mine reminded me when she called to ask for permission to exchange contracts.

As soon as you have exchanged, call your current insurer and they will add the new property to your current insurance. You can’t do it beforehand. They will need to know the completion date too.

The insurance can start immediately they they receive the phone call from you to say that you have exchanged.
