Can you move a thermostat?

Hi all

I am moving to a house which has an open fire. The current owner said that when the living gets to a certain temperature due to the fire, the heating goes off.

So you end up with a toasty living room and cold rest of the house.

I just wondered, can you move a thermostat? To solve this problem?

We moved ours, then replaced it with a Hive smart thermostat that can go virtually anywhere.

It’s only a switch.

Could you get it changed to a portable wireless one?

Or just turn up your thermostat when it clicks off.

Yes. If you move a traditional thermostat then you have to move the wire from its current location to the new location..the wire runs from the thermostat (which has the on off switch inside it controlled by a temperature sensor) to the central heating unit. This probably will involve punching holes in your walls which you will then have to patch and paint.

it would be far easier to exchange your current traditional thermostat for a smart one that has the option of a remote sensor. I know Nests do as I have one. You then put the sensor in the cold room (on a shelf) and tell the thermostat to prioritise the remote sensor.

Brilliant, thank you everyone. Looks like I shall have to join the 21st century 🤔. I shall look into the new remote/smart ones.

Yes we were quoted around £100 to move ours from the boot room to the dining room so easier to access
