Help figuring out gas usage

Moved home in the summer. Gas meter shows my usage has only been 30kwh from the last day of September until today. I haven't used heating very much, very little hot water (one short shower a day). All other appliances electric including oven and hob. Can this be right? Reading was 3179 30th Sept, 3208 today. Ignored red number.

I have a hot water tank which comes on twice a day for 20mins a time. Electric usage in same time frame has been approx 220kwh. Can anyone help? Having a smart meter fitted early December but worried something isn't right! Energy company have flagged as 'something doesn't look right' when I entered readings. This happened before but I sent photos of the meters and was accepted.

Anyone's thoughts welcome! Obvs stressed about saving up a big bill

Meters don't read in kWh, they read in m3 or ft3. I think someone had a problem with a meter that read 100ft3 units on another thread.

If your meter is in m3 (it should say on the meter) then you use 30m3 (not 30 kWh) in about 60 days, or 0.5m3 a day. To get m3 into kWh multiply by 11.

So if your meter is in m3 then you are using about 5 kWh a day (0.5x11) which is not to different to me (hot water and hob only).

Thanks so much, that makes sense. Mine is ft cubed so need to work that out

If it is ft3 then it is more likely to be 100ft cubed units.

1m3 is 31 ft3 I think (check on the web) so one of your units (100 ft3) would be about 3m3.

You'd be using about 1.5m3 a day in that case - or about 16.5kWh.

Feels quite a lot for just the hob and hot water but not completely impossible, esp. if you have had the heat on a few times.

Of course if they are billing you in Ft3 and your units are 100ft3 then you are paying 100x less than you should ...

I doubt very much that your units are ft3 because the gas you would use would be absolutely tiny.

www.energylinx.co.uk/gas_meter_conversion_feet.html

This gives a 965kwh usage from 30ft³ of gas

GasPanic · 24/11/2022 14:35

Sorry. 1m3 is 35 ft3 not 30 ft3.

Anyway, the calc is about the same.

Your bill will be really tiny if they are billing you in ft3 and what seems to me to be about right if they are billing in 100ft3 units.

Thank you both am trying to attach photo to work it out but I think around 1000kwh could be right which I've got from online calculator. Not due a bill for ages!

Is there not a decimal point on the meter so the reading is 320.8 rather than 3208?

That's a little bit of leaf on the inside of the meter 😬

Yeah I think your white number units are x100 ft3.

So you used about 900 kWh in 2 months (30 (meter reading) x100 (ft3) x 0.3 (kWh per ft3) = 30 x 100 x 0.3 =900 kWh

That's about £90 worth of gas in 2 months (900 kWh x £0.10 per kWh).

Sounds about right to me.
