Draft from chimney.

Hi
Live in a small terraced Victoria house. Finding it difficult to keep warm. Have an open fireplace in living room that is used occasionally. Looking for a way to try and reduce drafts from it.

Online search throws up chimney sheep, inflatable blocker or a material cover thingy that's goes over the fireplace fixed with magnets.

Has anyone managed to reduce drafts in this situation? What might help?

Thanks

Yes, the inflatable chimney thing did a good job for us

Years ago we used a bin liner filled with scrunched but o newspaper and bubble wrap to stop a chimney draft. —— we also put an a4 piece of paper with the message to unblock chimney before use, in the fireplace, the coal bucket and in the fire lighter box - because people memories are not infallible!!

Thank you both. Sounds like it's worth doing then.

Good idea about leaving message to prevent mishap.... Can see that happening here...

I put an old pillow in a black bin bag up the chimney. It works well, but as others have said, remember to remove it before lighting a fire and on Christmas Eve for Santa.

I have this issue too and I was told it was impossible because air flows naturally up chimneys! Glad to hear I'm not imagining it.

We have a chimney sheep and it’s been great

Honeyroar · 23/11/2022 10:31

We used to use newspaper when I was little. My dad made a little door/blocker for his. We have a wood burning stove now, which solves the issue!

Chimney Sheep is great, makes a massive difference. It also has a little tag hanging down so you don't forget to remove it.

Thanks for the recommendations all.
An sure we can't all be imagining it, or that they'd be do many solutions if the problem didn't exist..
Going to order an inflatable or chimney sheep online, reassured to hear they help.

We have a Chinmey Sheep. Very effective - before if you put your hand into fireplace (unlit!) you could feel cold air coming down.
It has a warning dangle

Another recommendation for the chimney sheep here! It's made a significant difference to the temperature in my front room.

I put screwed up newspaper up the chimney and then more screwed up newspaper under and into the chimney - worked a treat. But obviously don't forget its there and light a fire.

We've done exactly the same. Made a real difference.
