Help! Urgently need to choose hallway light

Any lighting experts or those with naice taste around?

I need a light for the centre of a triple return staircase which leads to a first floor gallery landing. So kind of like a square staircase with the last bit the landing.

House is 30s but also a bit brutalist so thinking either Art Deco or going with the strong house vibes.

Chandelier with glass rods, or Art Deco style glass or a giant brutalist lantern or a more traditional brass chandelier with some glass. (Some pics below of examples of the above as apologise my descriptions leave a lot to be desired - seems describing lighting is an art form in itself lol 😂)

Totally lost! Please help.

What about something like this: www.darlighting.co.uk/naeva-4-light-pendant-satin-black-crystal-nae0422.html

It's kind of a minimalist chandelier so almost a cross between the chandelier and the lanterns. I think it would look striking against the paint colour.

This is my favourite lighting manufacturer and there are some other nice options on the website.

LemonSwan · 23/11/2022 19:32

Yes I do like this type of thing. This is very similar to what I tried to bid on a couple of weeks back. Has a bit of ‘sliding into deco’, a bit of industrialist to match the Crittal.

Sadly was outbid 😭

😬

LemonSwan · 23/11/2022 19:38

Lol that was actually wrong one. The one I bided on was even worse - Bernadi at £2850 😭

Maybe I should have kept on bidding lol

The only thing I would be mindful of is that I’m not sure how much weight I would want to hang from our ceilings as they are the original lath and plaster. Might be ok if you can find a joist to screw into but that might also affect placement.

Baxdream · 23/11/2022 20:14

What about something like this - I have a similar Laura Ashley one

Our house is 1920s, I don't care for art deco, and for the hallway the tiffany type things which I liked hung too low for tall visitors, as the ceiling there has been lowered, and were too colourful for the paintings we have there - I spent days trawling through various websites and in the end we went for these- fairly plain, clear glass, but a hint of early 20th century. (we had bare bulbs for 3 years because of various things....so not just you!)

I feel your pain, we have the same. After spending literally years with a single bare bulb in the sitting room because we couldn't find anything we liked (to be fair, the decorating isn't finished in there due to other jobs elbowing it aside) we found a fantastic fitting. The drawback- it weighed a ton- as in, over 12kg. OH had to go into loft (this is a bungalow) and build a timber structure across the rafters to spread the weight out, as never mind the laths, just one rafter wouldn't have been enough.😬

BlueMongoose · 23/11/2022 20:52

You beat me to it, we have the same!

JaninaDuszejko · 23/11/2022 21:01

I don't think the lantern would be spectacular enough, it's a bit rustic. And I think repro Tiffany lights are dated (although if you had an original one that would be acceptable).

Love the pooky light design and think that's a good way to go. The light @Yellownotblue posted is my favourite of the thread I think. To throw another suggestion into the ring I have a slightly later house (1920s) and have this Sputnik light in brushed brass in our hallway. But realky, if you're not sure put up a paper lantern until you fall in love with the one.

pincushion5 · 23/11/2022 21:29

I'm planning to get this Pooky light after Christmas though not having thoughts after reading PP's comments on Pooky!

LemonSwan · 23/11/2022 22:51

Thank you! My god I never even considered the weight 😱 seems important.

I will have to get DP to investigate what’s above it!

Some more lovely lights. Thank you

DP loves the Sputniks. But thats the only style I think I don’t want. Typical. 🤦‍♀️

I can’t pin down why because I actually do like the lights and would have them elsewhere. I think it’s something to do with the stairs being busy and so wanting one solid shape object to centre it.

Still love these lantern styles even though probably impractical. Think I am being drawn to the Moroccan shapes of chandeliers because of the wall colour when probably not the right direction. Sorry more pooky! They seem to come up top in google shopping.

Glad to report apparently we have joist! So can have some weight 🥳

@pincushion5 , I’ve ordered this light from Pooky www.pooky.com/collections/ceiling-lights/products/bow-tie-6-arm-chandelier-in-black?tab=delivery-tab. I will let you know if it’s good quality once it’s installed (within the next three weeks). It was recommended to me by a designer who said it looks great, so we’ll see!

LemonSwan · 23/11/2022 23:08

Wow I do love that @Yellownotblue

Might suggest this to DP for the study actually! Will make him happy to have a Sputnik type.

Yeah Pooky kept coming up for me too, every result and lots of Instagram adverts for me, so I felt confident ordering. Their trust pilot gives similar reviews though, I then noticed they don’t show fitting or data sheet and drawings like other sites. It was really frustrating dealing with customer service, and I has the impression they had more interior design knowledge than lighting product knowledge. Super nice and polite though. Basically I asked them if a wall light could be fitted on my brick wall, they said yes, then it arrives with a trailing box that can only be hidden behind a stud wall. Refunded me easily but left a sour taste, I was on a tight timeline with trades. I ended up getting these and the retailers were great with drawings and photos: www.lampandlight.co.uk/modern-wall-lamp-gold-with-flex-arm-brescia-combi

@LemonSwan I haven’t ordered from them but Pure White Lines have amazing fixtures, and they won best stall at the recent interior design show. Run by a husband wife team with baby. They have my dream hallway light and wall lights www.purewhitelines.com

Actually if you filter by lighting on the Decorex exhibitors page lots of results come up to explore www.decorex.com/en/exhibitors.html

BakeOffRewatch · 23/11/2022 23:23

Ooh I’m going down a rabbit hole. Think these would look great on your staircase cocovara.co.uk/products/sceptre-pendant/

I liked the “birds of paradise” collection here, but I’m guessing POA means I can’t afford it 😂 emeraldfaerie.com/shop-ef/

It's not particularly my taste anyway, but that price, no bloody way!

what was the original
price? (I can't see it on your screenshot)

😁

We also have a couple of the wall lights which puts us in danger of rocking a pub vibe 😂

We also had similar in our first flat 25 years ago so they've stood the test of time design-wise as well. I love them.

LemonSwan · 24/11/2022 12:51

Wow Thankyou all! Really helpful as google is being awful at giving my brands or shop options. Right lots of browsing to do! Will report back.

Are you keeping those in ceiling lights ?
If yes , don't you think having those plus the styles you are suggesting will clash ?
