Finger parquet yea or nay

I know herringbone-style wooden flooring is a classic but it seems to be everywhere at the moment so as an alternative what's the general view of finger parquet (like this)? Is it the next big thing or a bit too reminiscent of doing gym in the school hall? 😁

I would investigate stripping rather than sanding, at least at first. You should be able to get a solvent which will remove glue and paint, although you will need to restrain afterward it will be a lot less damaging ( and less messy) than sanding the whole of a fairly thin floor surface.

FFS re stain . The floor is hopefully not going to be unruly.

Rocksludge · 25/11/2022 13:50

I love finger parquet. Is totally get someone in to sort that @lucysnowe2.

my primary school gym had herringbone parquet.

Hi all, not sure if anyone really wanted an update but we've finally had our floor restored! It looks totally fabulous imo and even DH, who was a little sceptical, is a fan. It's got a couple of coats of lacquer on top and will hopefully look good for a whole! Nb we've started calling it 'jenga tile' which I think is a good name for it!

That looks amazing! And much more environmentally friendly than ripping up and replacing

CellophaneFlower · 29/01/2023 13:56

Oh it's amazing OP, you must be over the moon. Especially since you'd considered laying it before you uncovered it!

sandranista · 29/01/2023 14:21

How lucky are you. That is just so gorgeous

RandomMess · 29/01/2023 14:23

Fantastic, I love it, love ours too indestructible

Pigeon66 · 29/01/2023 14:32

I dream of discovering a floor like this under carpet. It looks amazing!

Rainbowshit · 29/01/2023 14:40

That's looks fab!

ExhaustedFlamingo · 29/01/2023 14:40

Wonderful OP!!! Thanks so much for coming back and updating your thread. What a brilliant outcome for you. It looks really lovely.

I’ve just seen your thread today. What a wonderful find - you have a lovely floor there. The house l grew up in had this flooring in the hallway and dining room. My parents bought the house brand new in 1968. I have always liked this style of parquet. I remember feeling very grown up when was allowed to use the special polishing machine on it.

Wait, 1968?! My house was built in 1961, do you mean to say I might have this under the shabby laminate I inherited when I bought the house? 😱

I'm thinking almost certainly not, but it might get me to rip it out sooner - just in case 🙏

Starseeking · 29/01/2023 19:57

What an update, amazing find!

YukoandHiro · 29/01/2023 19:59

I like it but it's way more expensive than herringbone (our herringbone is due to be fitted in three weeks, so v recent quotations here)

YukoandHiro · 29/01/2023 20:00

Oooh I've just read the thread - it does look great, nice one OP

Violinist64 · 29/01/2023 21:24

@CellophaneFlower it could well be.

TheFireflies · 29/01/2023 21:58

It looks fabulous OP. We have it in our lounge and hallway and I love it.

lordloveadog · 29/01/2023 22:06

That's beautiful and so much better to use what's already there.

Gardenerboo · 29/01/2023 22:13

Amazing! I’d love this. Looks beautiful,

It's a 60s house so I guess original here too! @cellophaneflower definitely worth having a look :)

Hi OP, we have this in our 70’s house too and really need to clean it up - how long did it take, and did you do it yourselves? Plus, how messy / dusty was it when in progress?

Happydays321 · 29/01/2023 22:46

OP that looks amazing, thanks for the update.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/01/2023 08:31

OMG I stand corrected!

Congratulations OP, that looks fabulous. What a find! You were definitely meant to have it 😊

JoanThursday · 30/01/2023 08:37

Wow! Lucky you! We had the same in my childhood home (built 1966). Love it!
