Finger parquet yea or nay

I know herringbone-style wooden flooring is a classic but it seems to be everywhere at the moment so as an alternative what's the general view of finger parquet (like this)? Is it the next big thing or a bit too reminiscent of doing gym in the school hall? 😁

No no no - really dated! I don't like herringbone either but have seen it with supersized planks and that looks a bit more modern.

AgathaMystery · 15/11/2022 09:15

@lucysnowe2 yes it does need a lot of work. The bitumen either has to be chipped off super cold or melted off - scraped off on a warm day. It’s horrific. You can’t sand it off as just one piece wrecks sandpaper instantly. Never known anything like it. We have a jig set up after advice from Sally (sissinghurst location house on Instagram). It’s so tedious though.

Rainbowshit · 15/11/2022 09:17

Not keen sorry.

We had this in one of my community centre projects so it's forever associated with there for me. It was nice enough and we retained it as it was original but it did suffer lifting particularly badly if it was humid (summer) or got damp from shoes in (winter). Worse than the regular parquet which was in the meeting room.

Oh dear I didn't mean to post that?! Hoped to post a photo of Old Dutch - it's in your original link. Hover over the photos - one of them is called Old Dutch!

RM2013 · 15/11/2022 16:08

I think I quite like it but depends on the decor you have it paired with. As it’s a small design it could look quite “busy”

BringMeTea · 15/11/2022 17:18

Love it!

jonesy1999 · 15/11/2022 17:24

Oh I love it.

I also thought it was 1930s and agree it can look great with mid century style furniture

Bumzoo · 15/11/2022 18:52

Oh no. We had that years ago and it's still as ugly now as it was then.

lucysnowe2 · 25/11/2022 08:44

Just bumping this thread because we've finally moved into our house. The sellers had agreed to pull up an old v dirty carpet from the living room and guess what was underneath!!

BUT.... it has paint and underlay glue etc on it, so can it even be used?

Is that real wood? Can you give it a light sanding?

MagentaTulip · 25/11/2022 08:56

I would have thought you could sand that down. It should be solid wood that can take a bit of sanding. We found the same in our hallway, ours didn't have paint splatters but we had professionals come and sand it down and it looked stunning once it was done.

What a find.
Brilliant.
Get advice from a flooring specialist.

I'm not sure. The fingers are separate, but they are not super thick - maybe about this thickness? (I got the image off ebay).

I've sent a photo to a local flooring company that does restoration... it would be awesome if it's doable (and also help persuade my husband to go for the design, as presumably sanding is cheaper than adding new flooring!)

Yes they are solid wood

Lazyteens · 25/11/2022 10:29

Ours looked similar. We rented the machines and gave it a light sand followed by Osmo. It looked great (needs a reapplication of Osmo now, but it’s been years since we did it). It will look lovely.

GreenFrogBlueFrog · 25/11/2022 10:35

What a find! I love it, vey 70s and fits with the current enthusiasm for mid century interiors. Even better if your house is a 70s build.

BringMeTea · 25/11/2022 11:00

Oooooo hope you can keep it. Looks great!

SollaSollew · 25/11/2022 12:11

I love it, have serious floor envy! If you were going more Scandi than 70s you could lighten it a bit if after sanding by using a Danish white oil.

CellophaneFlower · 25/11/2022 12:34

It's too busy for me and I wouldn't lay it... but I'd restore it if I found it! The fact you were considering it before you found it surely means that's the floor you were always supposed to have 😍

changeling2022 · 25/11/2022 12:38

Love it. I can't bear herringbone. Sick to the back teeth of looking at it

Yes, I feel that God wants me to have this flooring. 😁 (He's obv v concerned with interior design matters!)

There's a reason why not many people have it in their homes. My friend's parents have it. Herringbone is beautiful and classic that's neither.

Starseeking · 25/11/2022 13:48

Reminds me too much of primary school, so it's a no from me.
