“Gas Fires Are Dangerous And Expensive To Run”

According to the gas fitter I called about fixing /replacing a gas fire in our new home.
is this true? I know they are supposed to be serviced every year ( and a lot of folk don’t bother), but this gas engineer actually advising against a gas fire was pretty surprising.

We have a gas fire that we get serviced every year but hardly ever use. It costs the same amount to run the gas fire as it does to run the boiler and heat the entire house. It also doesn't heat lounge very well so not really useful.

As to safety... well, it is gas so there is always a risk. I would imagine the biggest risk might be a gas leak from turning it on or off incorrectly.

I would love to replace the gas fire with a small duel-fuel stove. It would be more useful and cheaper to run.
