Ikea Kallax - wall storage

Has anyone ever used kallax for a full wall bookcase? Ideally I'd like a cupboard setup at the bottom (2 cubes high) and then keep the rest as bookcases, stacked to the ceiling.

Has anyone ever done this?

If you go on Pinterest you’ll see 101 ways people have used IKEA products . I always use it in the planning stage and the range of ideas never ceases to amaze me

We have a 2x4 mounted on top of a 4x4 to do this. With baskets at the bottom, then cupboards, and open cubes higher up. Do fix to the wall for safety. The biggest pain is the skirting board, it might be worthwhile investigating installing on a plinth to get over the skirting board and mount flush to the wall to prevent things falling down the back.

Are you actually using them to store books/CDs/DVDs? Or more as a display for pictures/ornaments? If you actually want to use them for books etc the Billy Bookcases might be better.

Kallax is about 50cm deep so can feel a bit like wall of MDF. We have two big units in the kids room and it feels a bit like this. Billy is only about 30cm deep, so less imposing.

Billy is your friend. So many hacks and ways to make it look built-in.

I know loads of people who use Kallax for LPs - it's basically just the right size for them. Billy is the Ikea model for books usually but I guess it depends on how you want to show them. One thing that just about everyone with Kallax says is that you'd be advised to fix them to the wall just in case there's any slope in your floor etc.

If you want it for storing books the kallax cubbies are quite deep - if your happy to stack your books 2 deep, them it would work. Otherwise go for a billy.

I want it for my craft room. I've got ink and pen marker storage that will fit in it.
