Anyone with work starting soon want a chat thread?

We were quoted in February, and have been patiently waiting… builder is Dh’s mate so worth waiting for. Finally got the 2-3 weeks call last week, so starting in 2 (ish) and I cannot wait!

we aren’t building any footprint, but are knocking into our garage to make a small living room for the kids/playroom; taking down a stud wall to make a large living room on the back; installing a wall and double doors to split a through room, and having our bathroom split into 2 to make a smaller family bathroom and a separate shower room.

we’ve never done anything like this at all so feel very nervous/excited! I’ve not really allowed myself to get excited yet so as not to be disappointed but it does seem like he’s nearly due to start!

would love a chat thread, estimate our work will take 10-12 weeks.

@Labraradabrador ah thanks. I read through the whole thread the other day and it was so nice to have a record of this. It’s been a big project for us and a lot of money and honestly, when I just stood out there, my heart sang- it is exactly what I wanted and it will genuinely change the way we live and use our home. We’re all real homebodies as well so it’s so important to us. I can’t wait to put my furniture in tomorrow!

keep tuning in with your projects, my garage conversion and bathroom are still pending, due to start in a few weeks (a thread with a sequel, who knew???!)

Gosh that is beautiful!

Hall84 · 22/03/2023 19:22

That is absolutely stunning! You must be delighted 😄 congratulations for getting to the (first of many) finishing line 🎊

On Friday the movers moved our stuff in!! On Sunday our new sofas arrived.
Just need to unpack this week - only have time after DD goes to bed.

Annoyingly, waiting for handles on our built in wardrobes and the skip needs to be taken.

On Friday morning everything will be unpacked then we will finally move in. Long time coming and so happy!

That looks lovely @thenewaveragebear1983. We have just had building work start to redo our kitchen having been trying to find a decent builder and then waiting patiently for them to be able to start. But looking at how much destruction has been caused in just a few days and how much dust is managing to spread to every corner of the house is tough, so it's good to see your end results are worth the wait!

Can I ask what the paint colour you've gone for is? It's the sort of colour I'm looking at for the end result. Sorry if you've said elsewhere in the thread, I've read through but didn't spot it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/03/2023 20:42

@LeftTheWashingOut it’s a Valspar mixed colour called Earthy beige. Our room is east facing and the colour changes a lot during the day-sometimes it looks very sage green and other times it’s a really sandy beige. I recommend trying a tester pot, although even the sample on the wall looked different to the whole room painted. another close contender was Elk Antler, also Valspar and I’ll be using that on my dining room next door!

And the dust, oh my god the dust. It’s finally settled now after a week of having the floor down, but every single surface in our house was covered with a very fine layer of dust for weeks!

Thanks @thenewaveragebear1983 I hadn't seen your reply as I didn't get notified for some reason. That's a really interesting colour - I wouldn't have thought from the picture online that it could be green. I'll definitely get a tester as I want a very subtle green shade so perhaps this could do the trick. Our room is west facing though so will probably end up very different to yours!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2023 17:40

I did quite a lot of research about east/west facing rooms before choosing because they are unusual with the light. We actually have a west facing room leading into this room and I have chosen the same colour palette to run through both, so on the west side we’ll use elk antler and a darker green which is the colour match of my sofa in the finished room- with the same corally pink accents and natural wood.

It's sounds like you have far more style than me @thenewaveragebear1983 (and looks it from the pictures too!). I just pick whatever colour takes my fancy and go from there, which is how our house is looking less and less coordinated the longer we live here 🤪

However I take some comfort from the fact that you look like you've picked the same internal doors as I'm thinking of going for, so my taste must be vaguely on trend...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/03/2023 20:45

I don’t know about me being on trend @LeftTheWashingOut but I did have quite a strong idea of what I wanted! The doors are sliding pocket doors from howdens, they are really solid. They’re on a mechanism which means they slide open together, the kids call them the spaceship doors 🤷‍♀️

Oh it's just beautiful! I'm thrilled with the space we've gained but need to pull some money back to sort carpets and blinds

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/03/2023 09:24

@Hall84 its those bits that really add up don’t they. Especially when you then have that conundrum of “we’ve spent X thousands of pounds on it so realistically an extra bit here and there to get it perfect is a drop in the ocean…. “ vs “we’ve spent sooooo much money!!”
In the end we decided to go for top quality high street rather than high end- so eg. Dunelm curtains but the luxury range, dunelm tv unit etc. This is for our main room. For the garage conversion the kids can have all the tatty old furniture for their den 😂

Builder came round today, garage conversion starting next week! And so it all begins again…..

Hall84 · 05/04/2023 21:21

@thenewaveragebear1983 we're pretty lucky in that we don't need the rooms right now. So we can put the furniture in there and add more. At least in the short term. Good luck with the next stage!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/04/2023 20:24

Reviving this thread because the garage conversion started today!
