how good are modern night storage heaters

We are looking at buying a flat that would need new heating put in. The Home Report suggests that night storage heaters could be installed. We had these when I was a kid though and my recollection is that they were beautifully hot in the morning but when you wanted to study in the evening the room would be freezing. Are they better now? Are they much more economical than standard radiators which would cost less?

We've just installed a new one (the make is dimplex). They are still a bulky and costly to buy initially. But they are an improvement on the old one we had. I can control when the heat is kicked out now so it's not on when we are out during the day. It can also be WiFi controlled via an app. We haven't used it in the middle of winter yet so can't comment on how good the heat actually is or how expensive. We have no option for gas where we are so electric heaters are the only option.

I always reply with the same advice when nothing comes up about NSH.......... See if your supplier provides Economy10.
5hrs at night, 2.5hrs in the afternoon & 2.5hrs in the evening.
Makes NSH a fully flexible heating system plus you never run out of (cheap-rate) hot water.

I’ve got the dimplex “intelligent” ones and they still cost a fucking fortune. Plus you really need the engineers to know what they’re doing as I had 3(?) call-outs to dimplex before they finally figured it out. Perhaps the heaters are more intelligent than the fitters.

I use stand-alone oil radiators.

Do you find modern storage heaters with a fan noisy? I am thinking of getting them but hate the thought they'll hum a lot of the time.
