Sensible or Stupid to build an extension in a recession?

What are people's thoughts on this? We have the money in place, but not much of a buffer. Will it be cheaper potentially to build (materials etc) or will it likely just get more costly? I hate that I have limited understanding, and don't want to make the wrong decision. (We are currently at the point of finalising architectural drawings before submitting to planning)

I don’t think we have. There’s a half finished extension across the road, nothing’s been done for weeks, I suspect they’ve run out of money. Another house applied for planning permission for new windows (conservation area), they got it but work still hasn’t started. The guys who did our work are worried about the winter.

Ah, perhaps it looks like things to come in our area then.

But actually that’s only a few weeks work when you think about it.
