Laminate Flooring in a kitchen?

GreenFrogBlueFrog · 31/10/2022 11:28

Currently in the process of having kitchen replaced. Flooring arrived this morning and joiner took one look at it and said that fitting laminate flooring in a kitchen is a no-no due to the risk of damage from water spillage/leaking washing machine/dishwasher etc. Despite telling the flooring co when we placed the order that it was for a kitchen, they didn't mention any of the risks. I'm going to see if they'll do an exchange for LVT(?) but first of all, just wanted any experiences of laminate in a kitchen - is it as much of a potential disaster as my joiner is making out?

We have waterproof laminate in our kitchen. It looks great, and feels lovely underfoot.

Thanks both, I didn't know there was such a thing as waterproof laminate. Have spoken again to the flooring co who are happy to do a refund or exchange if we want to, which is reassuring. However they also said that any spillage would need to be significant and prolonged for it to cause real damage to the flooring. I think I need to sleep on it!

We've had laminate flooring in our kitchen for 10 years and had no problems. It would need to be a lot of water or over a long time for it to be a problem

We have laminate flooring in the whole of the downstairs rooms including the kitchen. I’ve also been very clumsy in the past and let the sink overflow on more than one occasion and had to mop up quickly!! Haven’t had any issues with the flooring and it’s been laid for about 3 years

We've had laminate flooring in our kitchen for past 8 years with no issues at all and I'm really clumsy so there are spills quite often, water splashing from the sink, water spraying all over the floor from the the spray tap, general toddler messes

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. I've decided to just go with the laminate, I think it'll be fine.

Be careful if you use a stainless steel cleaner spray, a friend got some of that stuff on her laminate floor and cupboard doors, and it has marked both.

Noted, thanks @BlueMongoose !
