Composite Front Door -help please!

JustOrderADoor · 25/10/2022 15:55

I need to replace my front door.

getting a composite door seems like the best option. They seems safer & better where a door gets a bit if water splashed on it (no porch, nothing can be added)

I do not want a white PVC door.

I do want something that feels 'heavy' & solid.

I also want one that doesn't have a handle to engage the locking, just a simple key lock.

Any advice, suggestions or warnings?

Find a local double glazing company with a showroom so you can see and feel one in real life

I've been to a couple (there aren't many around here) and I wasn't very impressed.

I was hoping to get some suggestions to fit my criteria & then look to see where I can find a show room.

I’m very happy with my Solidor one.

Cattytabby · 25/10/2022 16:09

I have just been to check who made our door. We have had it years. It is heavy and rock solid. It has a solid wood core and composite coating. No problems, secure and looks fantastic. It was made by Solidor. They did have a keyless entry option too.

We had a solidor fitted 2 years ago and not had any issues with it. It's very solid and looks just as good now as it did when fitted

@Cattytabby thank you, great to know it's been good over a few years!!

I'm not sure I'd want keyless entry, but I'll look into it.

@stormelf Solidor seems to be getting a lot of votes!

Hallmark doors have a website where you can design your door and then there will put you in touch with a local supplier.

I desperately need a new front door, I dont like any composite design Ive seen so I'll be interested in ideas

Beebumble2 · 25/10/2022 20:36

We had a Solid Door fitted in March. We did some research and decided they were the best. Been excellent so far.

DespiteAllMyRage · 25/10/2022 20:45

Solidor!

I’ve got one on the front and the back. Sourced my own knocked from elsewhere though.

@Undergroundovergroundwomblingfree

thanks for your post. Many of them do & its 'fun' to play around with designs, but I was asking/hoping for opinions on brands of doors that people actually have that match my criteria.

@DespiteAllMyRage
thanks for that! Yours looks lovely.

Solidor seems be be getting all the love! I might need to go to a different showroom, the one near me, the doors looked cheap (but we're actually very expensive) & the sales bloke was grim.

the company I had almost gone with, were
nice to deal with & fitted them
themselves, I just feel I need to look around a bit, see what I should be looking for & see what the other prices are like. A year ago I was quoted £1900 fitted. (Single door, no additional side panels etc)

Be careful with who you get it from, because some of them will be solidor suppliers but fit you a shitty cheap composite door from another company and pocket the difference.

I’d go to a few local ones who stock solidor and see who gives you good vibes. If you’re near Nottingham/East Midlands I can highly recommend D&M Windows in Ruddington. He’s done both my doors, and is due back imminently to quote for sash style windows for the whole downstairs.

TwoBlueFish · 26/10/2022 17:16

Another one with a solidor we got ours through The Window Repair Centre www.solidor.co.uk/installers/window-repair-centre-ltd/

Ours is Ludlow with a doctor door knocker.

Keyless entry was the best decision i made. Kids have the code, no locking themselves out or losing their keys

QuebecBagnet · 26/10/2022 22:12

We had keyless entry but don’t use it anymore. Got locked out too many times as the widget which spins round seems to get out of synch with itself and after x hundred times will spin round and think it’s unlocked but hasn’t spun far enough.

Dh could reset it but it kept happening with increasing frequency. Not sure if we had a dodgy one but it was expensive and the company were very unhelpful and I wasn’t prepared to buy another.

MonkeysandParrots · 27/10/2022 00:23

We recently replaced our front door and used these guys

www.timberwindows.com

The door is heavy, solid feeling, fabulous quality and the service/installation was brilliant. However, it came at quite a price … saying that, we also had a local independent guy out to quote and he wasn’t much different so maybe new front doors are just bloody expensive!

HiveBee · 27/10/2022 08:56

I’ve got a Yale keyless entry part and we’ve never had an issue with it since the day it was fitted
