What did this call from the solicitor mean?

Very confused about a call I received from a solicitors office that acted for us when we sold our house earlier this year. The admin lady called to say they owe us “£300 on our ledger”. This has since been transferred into our bank account. I asked repeatedly what the money was owed to us for/what she meant by they owe us money on our ledger, and she said she wasn’t sure?! Can anyone shed any light on what this was all about please?! Thankyou!

You need to ask.the solicitor. The accounts person doesn't know. Presumably you've overpaid somewhere along the line.

They just mean they still had £300 in your client account which they needed to refund you. You could ask them for a completion statement to see what it was from. Could have been a cash back on your mortgage product, they could have taken too much off for estate agent fees. Did your stamp duty reduce after the budget but you had already paid the higher amount? Could be a number of reasons but none of them anything to worry about.
