Do you give removal men/women a tip?

We're having a big move next week which will mean a long day for us all, especially the removal people. I'll obviously provide drinks etc but is it usual to give a tip?

We moved a few weeks ago and each of the 4 removal people got £20 .

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/10/2022 14:21

Depends what they are like. The willing and cheerful all got extra, the grumpy old sod who scratched my cupboard….no.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 21/10/2022 14:24

Yep. 4 blokes moved me - gave the Gaffer £150 to split as he saw fit plus a crate of beers. Also provided all teas, coffees, cold drinks and bought them sandwiches and crisps for lunch. They worked their arses’ off from 8am till 6pm and had to cope with a lot of stairs. They also dismantled and rebuild a whole wardrobe system.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 21/10/2022 14:27

Yes. It's a grueling job. Also food/drink through the days.

ByViolet · 21/10/2022 14:30

We didn’t, no. It didn’t occur to me/didn’t know it was a thing. But the whole thing cost £1,400+ (600 of which was unexpected extra expense on the day because they estimated the number of vans wrong) so I think that was enough money anyway really.

Provided loads of tea/cokes/biscuits though.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 21/10/2022 14:39

Yes, we had 2 movers so £100 for both, plus drinks all day and I ordered pizzas for lunch

SilentHedges · 21/10/2022 16:36

2 movers, only took from 09.00 to 13.00 as we didn't have much stuff. Drinks provided a day and £20 each.

CaptainWentworth · 21/10/2022 16:42

£100 each?? Is this in London? We gave them (I think, can’t remember exact amount as DH did it) £20-30 each) for a hot day with a lot of sitting around waiting for bank transactions to go through. It was chucking it down though when they finally were able to unload the van. Also we weren’t able to provide drinks and snacks because we were technically homeless for most of the day!

MakkaPakkas · 21/10/2022 16:45

I never have. Don't they charge whatever they think is a fair price and then you pay it? It's quite a while since I last moved though.

MakkaPakkas · 21/10/2022 16:46

As pp said, I've also never provided drinks & snacks because everything is packed up

DrDetriment · 21/10/2022 16:48

I didn't realise this was a thing. I've never tipped removal men.

FlowerArranger · 21/10/2022 16:49

No drinks??!!!

Rule number one when moving; kettle tea sugar biscuits get packed last...

CaptainWentworth · 21/10/2022 16:53

In our case we packed most stuff ourselves the days before, the removal people packed the kitchen (kettle included!) then we were out of our house by 11.00 and didn’t get keys for the new house until something like 18.00. Not sure what I was supposed to do with a kettle with no kitchen in which to use it?

We were more worried about how to entertain 18 month old DD and stop her getting under people’s feet to be honest. Oh and phoning the solicitor every half hour to work out what the hell was going on with the delay!

DrDetriment · 21/10/2022 16:53

Of course I'd give them tea and water etc, just not a monetary tip.

DrDetriment · 21/10/2022 16:48

I didn't realise this was a thing. I've never tipped removal men.

Same. Moving is stressful and expensive enough, and yes everything is packed up. My priority wouldn't be getting the kettle our asap.

Ifulikepinacoladas · 21/10/2022 16:56

*out

Jessiesthedog · 21/10/2022 20:36

I ended up quite happily giving them a £250 tip because they stayed to build the shed for me without switch all of my possessions from the garage would’ve been completely ruined

orangeisthenewpuce · 21/10/2022 20:39

Have never had any removal women but have always given the removal men breakfast (takeaway sarnies) and a tip.

Salome61 · 21/10/2022 20:43

I tipped my removal men, they were fantastic, £20 each and I'd bought cold drinks/biscuits.

Limescaleandlemons · 21/10/2022 20:44

None for ours. They were shit.

RidingMyBike · 21/10/2022 20:47

We'd intended to give ours £20 each last year, then they were so awful and tried to charge us loads etc at the last minute when all our stuff was loaded we didn't!

Starseeking · 21/10/2022 21:09

I usually shout the crew a hot drinks and bacon rolls run to start off the day, then I give a £10 per person tip once the job is done.
