Informing council about buyers of house we sold

Hello, we sold our house last month and completed the sale and moved out. Someone from the council has contacted us and asking for the details of the buyers for council tax.
I thought it is the buyers who should inform the council not us as the previous owners. I never heard of sellers needing to contact the council and providing the TR1 forms, etc.
For information, council has asked following:
1.
Please provide this office with the full name(s) of the purchaser
2.
Please provide copies of the relevant TR1 / completion notices
3.
Was the property sold as furnished/unfurnished?
4.
Name and address of your solicitor:
5.
Please confirm the exact date you vacated your home.

This isn't massively uncommon, in my experience. We had to do it for both places I've sold - well, actually the solicitors did it for us the second time. They said it was usually required if there was a discrepancy in move in date or other information used to calculate council tax, and they needed to prove who was liable.

When cancelling my council tax bill recently I was asked to provide details of the buyer, as well as my own solicitor, presumably to confirm details if the council chose.

Well this is interesting I've never sold a property however I bought this one and I did get a letter to this house from the council saying we understand you now own this property and please call use to sort council tax, or something to that effect.
And I did wonder how they knew!!

I had this many years ago, and assumed that, a bit like selling a car, if I don't tell them about the new ownership I might be responsible for any ongoing debts.

I gave them the details!

I had to provide all of that information when I contacted the council to give them my moving out date. It was part of the online form I needed to complete.
