Anti-burglar fence ideas for a thin fence!

We need to add some extra protection to one of our fences in our garden but the edge of the wood panels at the top is thinner than our other fence and applying the regular deterrent spikes is proving difficult as it's not wide enough.

Does anyone have any creative ideas?

If the fence is thin a burglar could just push it through. Get a metal palisade fence with spikes £40-50 per m.

Or a big dog and put it on a long leash in the garden when you are out.

We had two trained guard dogs in our old place abroad when we had problems with some of the locals. If you came out of the house they were lovely and calm, if you came near the fence they turned into hellhounds.

Holly bushes or anything with brambles, if you don't have young children.

Pyracantha shrubs, very thorny but with nice berries.

Thorny shrub (there are plenty) which can be trained to grow flat up the fence. Pyracantha, as sugpested above, is a good one. If the fence is yours, put some wires across at intervals wound round brass screws put into the posts (brass won't rust like steel) and tie the plant up the wires as it grows. (Wear gloves, esp. if it's Pyrarcanthus!) Prune to keep it flat.

If you're planting in front of it as suggested, you could use anti vandal paint on the top part of the fence and fence posts - depends who/what the fence back onto.

You could put a trellis on top of the fence and grow a very thorny climbing rose- some are much thornier than others!

apparently if you put a wobbly decorative trellis all along the top of your fence, burglars don't like it because if they climb over it will break and there will be a visible gap showing that someone has tried to get in.
