Low-VOC flooring options

Hello,

After some advice about what low-voc flooring options are out there. We are replacing existing 10 year old Sisal carpets in master and children's bedrooms. The Sisal, while hardwearing, has stained a lot just from water spills. I'd like to get something that is a bit more stain resistant. I don't want to go for synthetic carpets (I can't stand the smell of new carpets and am worried about the chemicals treatments in them like flame retardant off-gassing for a while). We are in a first floor flat conversion where the lease stipulates carpets in bedrooms so can't go for hardwood flooring.

Any ideas what would fit the bill.

  • Is Seagrass better than Sisal for stain resistance?
  • Are moths a huge problem will wool carpets?
  • What kind of low-VOC underlays and glues can we use?
  • Any carpet fitter recommendations (SE London)?
TIA!

I'm so interested in this. Yes wool can attract moths. I wish we were in Tudor times and just strew the floors with no VOC herb branches.

We were looking at carpets last weekend (for the first time in our lives) and were quite impressed with how many 100% wool options there are now. They come pre-treated for moth, although we went for an untreated one as we have very young kids and are expecting to have to replace within a few years anyway. The treated ones are more expensive.

Lots of recycled options too, although I don't know about VOCs on those. I do know that I have never liked the look of carpets at all, but am very pleased with the textured and apparently hardwearing one we picked, and how it is obviously a natural product rather than having the shine of the non-wool or partially wool ones we looked at.
