Changing builder

We had a some quotes to do a garage conversion based on starting work in middle of September. We asked a builder to proceed on the 30/8 and confirmed that they’d start middle of October.

Since then we can’t get any updates on start date it’s been very much radio silence.

Obviously we’re given it a bit longer but just in case we do decide to use an alternative builder are we still liable for anything as we accepted the quote?

I doubt you're liable for anything unless he's already had materials delivered or scaffolding erected - did you sign a contract? Have you had an official quote with any T&C's inferring otherwise?

The main issue that you will have is getting another builder. Anyone decent will be booked out, and to be honest if you could get someone to start that soon that I'd be taking a long hard look at them and finding some independent references.

My dh is a roofer and is now booking for work next spring, it really is that busy. He's also had to put several jobs back as there are certain things that are very weather dependant.

No contract or T&C’s on the quote at all. I had to ask about quote validity and VAT as that wasn’t specified either.

My gut feeling is something doesn’t seem to be quite right.

Sorry to bump just wondering how much communication I should expect and maybe I’m overreacting.

At what point should you get a start date confirmed?

We have building work starting soon and a provisional start date pencilled in for about ten days time but it isn't firmed up yet.

But house is empty as we're living in rental and we did tell the builder we'd start as soon as they were ready!
