Permanent cat pee damage- help!

2 1/2 years ago we bought our house and the cats moved out, but there was a lot of damage from them peeing on carpets/ doorframe etc and it soaking in.

On the whole we've replaced bits and I really hope have got rid of most of it, however there are some areas of skirting board, the bottom of 2 door frames and some floorboards that seem to have absorbed it permanently. I've tried sanding it away, but the wood feels wet and rotten- if I carry on sanding I'll have no door frame left!

I tried painting it with wood and metal undercoat, but it has discoloured within days and has peeling straight off in one place. Is there anything I could paint it with to seal it or to I need to admit defeat and replace everything?

Very grateful for any help or advice.

  • should read 'we've ripped out everything we could' rather than 'replaced bits' 😂

Get a joiner in and get rid of the wet smelly stuff, but I'd expect it to be dry by now, are you sure nothing's leaking?

Get the joiner in he can cut away the rotten wood and scarf in new pieces

I’m guessing the skirtings are mdf not wood? One of my cats had a peeing problem and used to spray where the litter tray was. The mdf skirting absorbed the pee and swelled and never went back.

i had that section replaced with wood. A joiner did it easily and you can’t tell where the mdf skirting stops and the wood starts.

Pretty certain nothing is leaking. Thanks for the advice, was really hoping there was some form of sealant/ barrier I could use. Will set my poor DH on it instead 😂
