Where to live in London. Looking for similar areas

itscorn2244 · 17/09/2022 18:23

Hi all,

Looking for similar areas to:

Herne Hill
Dulwich
Hampstead
Muswell Hill
Stoke Newington
Chelsea
Islington
Clapham

Ideally with good train links (with the odd exception eg. Muswell Hill)

Looking for a lively, village-y, safe, clean atmosphere. Ideally with a naice local market.

For a young single woman moving to London and looking to let a studio.

Ok,all those areas are different to each other and the costs will wildly vary too. Chelsea zone 1 more pricy than Stokey

Herne Hill no Tube, but train station or bus to a tube station
Dulwich no train but bus to tube or DLR

Hampstead tube , bus and overground train
Muswell Hill bus to tube, Highgate or Bound Green. Train station Ally pally and a walk
Stoke Newington Train and buses, Bus to

Chelsea
Islington, where? That’s a borough? Do you mean upper street? Finsbury Park? Angel
Clapham Two tubes and a train line

what is your budget, that’ll determine where you end up

I lived in Burnt Oak for many years and loved it! Lovely community feel

Zone2NorthLondon · 17/09/2022 18:43

Ok so
Crouch end, really nice. Self contained has good mix independent & chain store
Camden Town great transport, urban with access to great parks too
Bound Green/ Bowes Park. Near tube. On the up, close to Muswell hill
Lewisham good transport, had a makeover
Blackheath open space, villagey

These are all wonderful suggestions.

I know Camden Town can be very run down in places. Are there any specific parts of Camden you would recommend?

They are very very different, whats your budget. What station would you need to get to.

Thank you. She's already shortlisted those areas listed (looking to pay around £1300 pm for a studio) and is looking for more areas to check out that have a similar villagey vibe.

Commuting to which station/tube line? A direct commute will massively improve quality of life compared to 3 changes on the tube/train.

loveisanopensore · 17/09/2022 19:05

Hornsey
Has a train into Moorgate. Easy to get bus to Turnpike Lane or Finsbury Park.
Alexandra Palace Market.

HappyHamsters · 17/09/2022 19:07

what train links is she looking for, that will make a huge difference.

InterviewWorry · 17/09/2022 19:11

Hampstead and Chelsea are going to be too expensive on that budget, unf.

She'll need to get off at Oxford Circus but isn't too worried about a long commute as she's a big reader etc. Also some wfh during the week.

Interestingly we've found a lot of suitable studios in Hampstead! Obviously compromising on space but well renovated

Yes that a good suggestion

HappyHamsters · 17/09/2022 19:20

Are you looking at Hampstead Village or West Hampstead, they are very different areas and in price. She could get a 1 bed flat a bit further out somewhere like Beckenham/Bromley for her budget, plenty of green spaces, good shops, direct trains to Victoria then short tube journey to Oxford Circus.

For example, they seem to come up every so often in this building

Tiny but perfect for her at this stage of her life!

West Norwood you could rent a 1 bed, if that interests, good rail connections from West Norwood and Tulse Hill or bus to Brixton for tube to Oxford Circus, or express bus X68 to town.

West Norwood has a great monthly market, lots of local community events, picturehouse cinema, but the centre is not as village like as HH or Dulwich, although those are bus / bike / walk away, including weekly markets at each.

There dont seem to be many studios in HH or Dulwich, to do with housing stock their I think. Hampstead is a big varied area, but I am surprised anything is available in Chelsea.

Those three seem an absolute bargain- if she can get something like that then great. Not much on at the moment sadly.

cheapskatemum · 17/09/2022 19:27

Walthamstow Village has that Villagey atmosphere & there's a market in Walthamstow too.

HappyHamsters · 17/09/2022 19:37

Those Hampstead flats look nice but it was back in January so prices may have gone up now. Pimlico is very central, something like this

Cant believe the love for Burnt Oak on this thread... 🤔 I know it well and would not in any way say it is similar to the places on OPs list... 😂
