Help please with choosing colour/decor for my hallway

I live in a Victorian villa so large rooms/high ceilings. The cornicing, doorframes and skirting are white at present. The hallway extends up the stairs as there is no cut off so to speak. Any ideas on what would be nice? The floor is original tiles, so they are staying, need to get them spruced up at some stage though!

The colour just now is plain boring magnolia. We rented the house out for number of years when we lived away. Please ignore the rubbish lying around, that is all going of course except for the piece of furniture with the mirror. Also, some ideas on the banister, which I want to renew but can't afford right now! How can I make it nicer??

We have a huge skylight up the stairs which lets in loads of natural light.

Photos attached and thanks in advance.

Pick a colour from your floor tiles. Is there a sort of steel blue in there?

That is an absolutely gorgeous hall. Envious!

Thanks, FuzzyPuffling, yes there is a blue in there. I keep thinking a nice striking blue would be nice. the area is so vast though that I'm scared of it being overkill!

Wow what a beautiful hall! I'd probably go for a coolish neutral, but if you're feeling daring my parents have F&B Pigeon in their hall with very similar floor tiles and it looks fabulous with white banisters/skirting/cornicing/ceilings

My parents live in a Victorian house and have lime plaster walls, so they've put a pale yellow lime wash in the hall and a pale blue lime wash in the front room.

On yours, I might be tempted to put in some low white panelling and have the top part navy blue.

I definitely think with that size space you could go really striking with blue, keeping the woodwork white. Or Stiffkey blue us a smart choice which never looks wrong. How about a stair runner using that mustardy colour from the tiles?

Thanks everyone, these are really brilliant ideas. Gorgeous colours! I must say the F & B Pigeon is gorgeous as the Stiffkey blue, that is one of the colours I'm looking at. You don't think it would be too much with one colour?

KatherineofGaunt, we have been mulling over panelling, will need to look into cost. We've loads of work to do in this house, it is lovely but a big money pit. You don't want to know what we spent on dry rot when we first bought it!

I love the blue suggestions. It's a big hall so could take it. I like this mustard too.

If you go with panelling I'd actually suggest painting the panelling blue and having the white or lighter colour above.

Or you could just opt for a dado rail with textured Victorian wallpaper underneath.

Thanks again everyone, some good ideas and gorgeous colours. Love them all to be honest, so hard to choose. I think we'll be going with painting as opposed to panelling for cost. Will be bold and brave; it can always be painted over!!
Last question, do you think the banister would be better one colour and if so dark or light?

My parents renovated their Victorian house from one with a hole in the roof and completely buried in ivy/undergrowth to their lovely house today. So I can well believe what you have to contend with!!

Your floor tiles are gorgeous and your hallway is stunning!

A deep dark blue/navy would go nicely in that space.

I think the bannister is nice as it is - but you could leave it till last and then decide.
