How clean to leave house?

We’re hoping to exchange this week, and complete a couple of weeks later. I’ll obviously clean the house before we leave. I’ve already wiped down the insides of the cupboards, defrosted the freezer, and I plan to Hoover all the rooms, sweep the garden (paved), clean the insides the windows, wipe down kitchen/bathroom surfaces, clean loo/sink bath.

The following are a list of things I WASN’T planning on doing… but should I be?

  • weed flower beds / cut back plants
  • clean windows (outside)
  • dust Venetian blinds (there’s only one set tbf and they’re being left for free and are not too dirty)
  • clean curtains - we’re leaving them for free, and they’re pretty filthy. I just thought the buyers would like to be able to have some privacy when they move in, before finding their own curtains (very large windows, they’d need to be custom made)
  • clean out wheelie bins
I’m not really expecting any of the above to be done in our new place.

thank you!

Leave it as clean as you'd like the house you're moving into to be.

happinesslovescompany · 12/09/2022 13:11

I'd ask the buyers if they want the curtains and blinds leaving tbh. The rest sounds fine, but they may think you've left dirty curtains and blinds because you couldn't be arsed to take them down. On the other hand they might be grateful! I'd let them decide.

Well in an ideal world I’d want the house I’m moving in to to be spotless, with all the above jobs done, but I highly doubt that’s going to happen! I’d be happy to move in to the new house in a similar state that I’m going to be leaving my house in though.

I left curtains and blinds and I have to say I didn’t even think Of cleaning them. I didn’t clean them for myself. So not doing it just before leaving. Im a bit jaded though as every house I have cleaned before leaving and every house I walked into was dirty so I don’t bother now.

That is how ours was left and we were delighted

emmathedilemma · 14/09/2022 13:28

By clean out wheelie bins do you mean as in jet washing them rather than just leaving them empty? It depends how bad they are but I wouldn't expect that doing. I think the last bag of rubbish or two in the bin is probably acceptable to leave so long as there's space for the new people to add to it before the next bin day. Moving to a house with a bulging bin and no collection due for 2 weeks would really pee me off!

I kept back the vacuum cleaner and a box with a few cleaning bits and gave each room a quick hoover and wiped any dust as the furniture was removed.

Wouldn't have given the outside of the windows a second thought.

It is a lot to do when moving house. Not sure if your in a position but some cleaning companies do an end of tenancy/moving clean. Xxx

Twiglets1 · 14/09/2022 13:55

I wouldn’t do any of that stuff apart from maybe the wheelie bin clean if you can find a local company to do a one off clean. I wouldn’t expect it either.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/09/2022 14:29

I think it sounds lovely and you've done more than enough.

ginghamstarfish · 14/09/2022 17:53

I'd be glad if my sellers did that much! Maybe ask re curtains and blinds though

weed flower beds / cut back plants - no

clean windows (outside) - no

dust Venetian blinds (there’s only one set tbf and they’re being left for free and are not too dirty) - just give them a quick hoover

clean curtains - we’re leaving them for free, and they’re pretty filthy. I just thought the buyers would like to be able to have some privacy when they move in, before finding their own curtains (very large windows, they’d need to be custom made) - no

clean out wheelie bins - I would hose it if awful but not if just ordinarily dusty

Yeah it is never going to happen!
