Leak

After the recent torrential rain a brown patch appeared on one of the bedroom ceilings. I went up into the loft to have a look and could only see a small wet patch under a bit of the supporting wood. Would this be related to guttering do you think or something else? I can't see anything dripping through the roof.

Could very well be if the rain was very heavy very quickly and built up in the gutter pushing it under the roof covering, also if you have any moss or debris in the gutter this would exacerbate it.

Yes it was very very heavy all day. I will try and have a look in the gutters. We did have them cleaned just a few months ago though so I would be surprised if it was that. If it's down to really heavy rain pushing it under the roof covering, does that mean there is nothing I can do to prevent it?

I can't make out your picture but I think you have a roof leak. Water runs down the sloping timbers and drips off the bottom, so the actual leak may be well away from the wet patch.

Are you in Scotland? They look like sarking boards, which are superior to most English roofs.

I see no loft insulation, did you pull it back to enable drying out?

Schtuck · 07/09/2022 12:23

No I'm in Ireland. Yes I pulled the insulation back to try and locate the leak. I'm not sure about the sarking boards. I've attached a picture from further back.

We've got a guy coming later so hopefully he will be able to locate the leak.
